UCAR Visiting Scientist Programs is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral research scientist to engage in research on understanding climate variations in the Intra-Americas Seas (IAS) and their influence on climate extremes using global high-resolution coupled models. The research activities fall under the broad banner of climate variability, predictability and attribution. This is a new, full-time, two-year appointment, renewable for a third year. This position is located at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Climate Variability and Predictability Group in Princeton, New Jersey.The overall goals of the project are to:(i) improve our understanding of the mechanisms of climate variability in the IAS, as well as its connection to global climate and regional extremes;(ii) evaluate potential predictability of the IAS and its impacts; and(iii) conduct ensembles of climate predictions starting from estimates of the observed state of the climate system.The selected candidate will analyze high-resolution coupled climate simulations (including comparison to observed data), design and execute perturbation experiments with high-resolution climate models, and assess initialized predictions with high-resolution climate models.This candidate will be expected to document results in scientific publications, present results in seminars and at conferences, and pursue outside activities that advance professional growth, which may include contributing to educational programs, serving on committees and attending workshops.Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
Strong background in research on climate dynamics or a closely related field.Experience using and analyzing state-of-the-art climate models.Strong diagnostic skills in analyzing large datasets.Ability to work independently and conduct research with minimal supervision.Ability to travel as needed.Skill in oral and written communication.This is a new, full-time two-year term position with the possibility of extension.
