Position Title: Part-Time Chinese Instructor (Pool)Location: Human Resources DIST (DEPT)Percentage of Full Time: VariesFLSA: Exempt (does not accrue overtime)Months per Year: Semester assignments as neededSalary Range: Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Pending any course assignment, initial placement can range as follows: Lab Course - $75.48 up to $103.03 per hour. Lecture Course - $87.88 up to $118.85.Position Type: Part-Time Faculty, TemporaryThe Colleges seek a part-time faculty member in Language Arts. The ideal candidate will share the Colleges’ commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.This position is a “pool” position meaning that openings may or may not be currently available. Your application for this position will be kept current for a period of two years.Duties and Responsibilities:Teach courses offered in the Chinese curriculum.Assist in curriculum revisions and new course development.Consult with students during regularly scheduled office and lab hours.Maintain expertise in current practice and technologies.Serve as a member of division and college committees.Perform other professional duties as required by contract and general institutional needs.Minimum Qualifications:Possession of a Master’s or above in Chinese OR Bachelor’s in Chinese AND Master’s or above in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent.Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.Physical RequirementsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Subject matter preparation.Preference will be given to candidates who have:A native-level grasp of the Chinese language and the ability to teach the full range of community college courses in Chinese.Recent successful experience in teaching or preparation to teach both developmental and college-transfer level courses in Chinese.Evidence of outstanding ability as a teacher.Commitment to staying abreast with the latest developments in Chinese education.Ability to reflect on and evaluate one’s pedagogy and to examine its effect critically.Ability to organize and explain materials in ways appropriate to students’ abilities and learning styles.Ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning.Ability to motivate students to develop higher-order thinking skills.Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in foreign language education.Commitment to the teaching profession and enthusiasm for the mission of the community college.Ability and desire to work collaboratively with other teachers to enhance instruction, curriculum, and student success.Preferred Qualifications:Faculty Benefits:Academic employees participate in the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California or they may choose to participate in the STRS Cash Balance program or Social Security.Open Date: 07/08/2014Open Until Filled: YesSpecial Instructions Summary: Required application materials will be screened on the basis of Requirements and Desirable Skills and Abilities listed in this announcement.
