Position Overview

The Development Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for projects and tasks that support the fundraising, relationship-building, and communication efforts of the organization. The Development Manager will serve as the liaison for organizational-wide fundraising projects and direct marketing efforts and have project management responsibility for appeal design and creative assets, copywriting, development and execution of direct mail, online solicitations, peer-to-peer fundraising, and major gift appeals. The Development Manager will supervise development staff and be responsible for managing events, grants, designing programs, and developing new relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.

This position will take initiative in launching and implementing strategic fundraising and communications always working in partnership with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors’ Development Committee.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Fund Development

Develop an annual fundraising plan, in conjunction with Executive Director and Board Development Committee and lead, manage, and track its implementation.

Maintain and increase individual giving by cultivating, maintaining, and strengthening donor relationships.

Expand giving from new major donors by building relationships with donors, and managers of donor advised funds.

Support initiatives that are seeking and maintaining major business and corporate donations ($1,000 – $10,000+).

Manage development programs and initiatives to advance organization’s strategic priorities, promote collaboration and partnership, and engage supporters, donors and volunteers.

Identify new, innovative sources of fundraising revenue and other types of support (volunteer, in-kind donation of products and services, etc.).

Support strategic planning efforts with leadership team, management, and staff, to ensure that priorities are in alignment with Foundation for the Children of the Californias’ long-term goals, mission, vision and core values.

Coordinate and significantly assist with grant writing in conjunction with contracted grant writer and/or Executive Director.

Manage the acknowledgment of all individual gifts, corporate sponsors, and grant foundation awards.

Work with contracted grant writer to ensure that all grant reports are completed and submitted on time.

Collaborate with the Hospital Infantil to ensure the continued alignment of development goals and program needs, reporting, etc.

Marketing & Communications

Maintain and improve relations, in conjunction with staff, with foundations, corporations, and individual donors through print material and digital content (e-blasts, videos, social media, brochures & fact sheets), site visits, special events, and other strategies to engage funders and volunteers.

Create and oversee the distribution and display of materials that amplify Foundation for the Children of the Californias’ impact in the community (videos and photography, donor reports, audience-specific public relations packages & content).

Oversee press release creation and distribution, in collaboration with staff, volunteers, etc. to ensure consistent messaging and successful, organized, well-attended media events.

In conjunction with staff and volunteers, ensure that Foundation for the Children of the Californias’ social media presence (through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other sites) is relevant, consistent and tailored to engage target populations (donors, supporters, school partners, youth, etc.).

Coordinate blog including research, writing, and posting—review website and social media statistics to monitor progress.

Fundraising

Responsible for framing and implementing all fundraising messaging on variety of social media and email marketing platforms.

Manages all fundraiser participant communication and registration and creates motivational strategies for all fundraising events.

Leads collaboration with staff and volunteers on marketing strategies for all fundraising events.

Support and collaborate with staff and volunteers for all events logistics and events timelines.

Support and assist in event participant recruitment, volunteer coordination and training volunteers.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Fluency in Spanish preferred.

Three to five years of fundraising experience preferred.

Three-plus years of management experience and proven contact management required.

Familiarity with fundraising CRM preferred (DonorPerfect, for example).

Familiarity with wide range of social media and email marketing platforms, including Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Evite, and Constant Contact.

Strong attention to detail with exceptional proofreading skills.

Must have excellent verbal, presentation and relational skills; excellent research and writing skills; sound time-management practices; a high degree of professionalism with internal and external audiences.

A team player with strong listening and problem-solving skills — must have a positive, creative approach and be imaginative, flexible and resourceful.

About the Foundation

The Foundation for the Children of the Californias is a tri-national collaboration with Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and is dedicated to enhancing the health and nutrition of underserved children residing in the San Diego-Tijuana Mega-Region primarily through the support of Hospital Infantil de las Californias, a model pediatric specialty medical and education complex, located in Tijuana, Baja California, just a half mile across the border.
