Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of San Mateo County recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work one-on-one with children and youth in the San Mateo County foster care and juvenile justice systems. CASA volunteers form trusted relationships with young people, acting as a mentor and advocate for youth in court and in the larger community.

The Development Director is a highly effective and strategic storyteller, relationship builder, ambassador, and fundraiser. The person in this outward-facing role leverages strong presentation and communication skills to cultivate, engage, and steward potential and existing donors and inspire them to support CASA of San Mateo County’s mission and the children we serve. This position is ideal for a proactive leader and creative problem solver with proven fundraising experience who will conduct targeted outreach, build a robust pipeline of individual and institutional funders and lead efforts to meet fundraising goals associated with all elements of CASA’s fundraising program, including grant writing, direct mail campaigns, major donor engagement, fundraising events, marketing efforts and community outreach.The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and directly supervises the development staff to raise funds for the organization’s $2.5M budget. This position works with the Board of Directors and other CASA stakeholders, including individual donors, foundations and corporations, government agencies, volunteers, and other community partners to achieve CASA’s development and strategic goals and ensure the organization’s ongoing funding and growth.

Strategy

Develop, implement and diversify the strategic fundraising of the organization to build, sustain and increase financial support in alignment with CASA’s mission and goals.Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team and participates in Board meetings with shared responsibility for achieving the organization’s goals and visionSecure funding to sustain and expand CASA of San Mateo County’s impactResearch, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective donors and sponsors to maintain and grow new and existing revenue sourcesWork with Executive Director, Board of Directors, and members of larger staff to identify and build relationships with individuals and institutions (foundations, government, nonprofit, and corporate) to support CASA’s sustainability, strategic growth and meet fundraising goalsIn partnership with the Executive Director, develop annual fundraising goals. Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive annual fundraising plan to achieve fundraising goalsWork closely with finance team to develop and track revenue projections for the annual budgeting process, reconcile systems and prepare reports for the Executive Director and Board.Develop and track revenue projections for the annual budgeting processDevelop and maintain systems for tracking progress toward fundraising goalsDevelop and conduct presentations to stakeholders, partners, and potential funders, including presentations at site visits and organization events and activities, as neededWork with communications staff to build a communications strategy (including social media, newsletters, promotional materials and annual report) towards informing supporters and raising CASA’s profile with donors.Individual DonorsSupport the Executive Director in her fundraising solicitations and activitiesManage and solicit a portfolio of individual donors, including prospecting new donors, preparing staff for funder meetings and stewarding current relationshipsOversee the creation of effective donor and prospect communication content, donor appeals, event collateral, strategy and calendarSupport the involvement of CASA’s board as active partners in the fundraising process and provide leadership for the Board’s Fund Development CommitteeOversee the planning and execution of all aspects of fundraising eventsBuild and maintain relationships with volunteer fundraisers, including the Host Committee for CASA’s annual fundraiserCoordinate and host donor visits at CASA eventsEnsure that gifts are acknowledged in a prompt and appropriate mannerEnsure that contributions and donor data are properly maintained in CASA’s donor database, including regular reconciliation of contributions with CASA’s finance team.

Work with Finance and Operations Director and Grants and Impact Manager to ensure grant spend down, develop grant proposals and budgets, and ensure complianceOversee and direct staff on creating proposals and reporting impact metrics for external fundersManage relationships with institutional funders, such as meeting with program officersEnsure the maintenance and management of a detailed calendar of preparation and deadline submission dates for grant proposals and reportsLead and partner with the Grants and Impact Manager and Executive Director to identify, cultivate and solicit foundation, government and corporate donorsManagement/Administration

Manage the Development Team which includes a Development and Communication Manager, Grants and Impacts Manager, as well as any additional development contractors or staffAct as primary staff liaison to Board of Directors Fund Development Committee, supporting committee chair and members with developing meeting agendas and conducting meetingsProvide training, support, and materials for Board members’ fundraising activitiesEnsure effective data tracking and accurate donor information. Current systems in use at CASA include Donor Perfect, Greater Giving, Benevity and CASA ManagerEnsure accurate and up-to-date donor recognition and acknowledgement in print and onlineEnsure that development-related areas of CASA’s website and social media platforms are accurate, well written and currentParticipate in and support CASA events, as neededCollaborate with volunteers, as needed, and other staff, including development team members, the Recruitment and Engagement Coordinator, and Executive Director to create, coordinate and/or produce materials and activities to increase CASA of San Mateo County’s visibility in the communityAct as media and community spokesperson for the organization, as delegated by the Executive Director on an as needed basisOther duties as neededQualification and Skills

A leader with 4+ years of proven success in fundraising, including securing major gifts from individual and institutional donorsExperience writing and managing grants, including crafting strong projects, working with finance staff, reporting on impact data, and liaising with program officers strongly preferredExperience managing a team and strong commitment to team-building and coaching developing staffCommitted to CASA of San Mateo County’s mission with ability to articulately and passionately communicate CASA’s mission, programs and accomplishmentsExceptional interpersonal skills guided by cultural competence to work with diverse constituenciesExcellent time management, organizational skills and attention to detailDemonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities simultaneouslyProficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPointExperience with customer relationship management (CRM) software, preferably Donor PerfectExcellent written and oral/public speaking communication skillsFlexible and willing to work some weekends and evenings to meet partnership and donor needs and to attend and/or assist with organization eventsCreative, innovative and goal drivenCollaborative team player with cheerful flexibilityPassion and respect for children and familiesAccess to reliable transportation.
