Job Description
The Chicago Red Stars are looking for an experienced Sports Nutritionist to develop and oversee nutrition policies and procedures and provide individual and group/team nutrition. The sports dietitian provides individual and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of competitive and recreational athletes, on–site and during travel. Primary responsibilities include counseling individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health, translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations, tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition service, and providing sports nutrition education for health and wellness programs for the players.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competitions, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, travel, and supplementation.
Coordinate nutritional care as a partner in a multidisciplinary sports medical/sports science team.
Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of athletes in the context of athletic performance and health
Provide nutrition education and outreach to athletes, teams, coaches, and technical staff.
Counsel players on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass consistent with good health and performance.
Provide personalized meals, fluids, and snack plans to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health.
Provides medical nutrition therapy as needed, to help manage or treat medical conditions.
Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury
Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron deficiency anemia.
Work closely with food service staff to provide sound nutritional meals specific to the goals of individual athletes, training schedule, staff, and team needs
Develop, maintain, and manage nutrition station, supplement station, and hydration station – including the process for ordering and receiving products
Evaluate and monitor the use of nutritional supplements for their legality, safety, quality, and efficacy.
Educate players in food selection and develop resources to support educational efforts.
Create, develop, implement, and schedule home match day meals.
Coordinate nutrition for domestic and/or international travel for example travel, catering, hotel, airlines, and competitions for team and individuals
Responsible for daily food service and catering that aligns with high professional sports standards.
Continually research the latest innovations and developments in the sports nutrition field.
Develops and oversees nutrition policies and procedures.
The position will directly report to the General Manager & Director of High Performance/Medical
Qualifications & Knowledge
Bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, or related area, granted from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university. Master’s degree in nutrition or exercise physiology preferred.
Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.
Minimum two (2) years of experience in nutrition counseling, preferably with an emphasis on sports nutrition.
Must have strong knowledge and skills in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, lipid management, eating disorders, weight management, food intolerances, and other diagnoses, as well as sound knowledge of performance enhancement principles and strategies.
Certification/License: Registered Dietitian with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice. Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred
Skills/Abilities
Excellent communication, presentation, and counseling skills.
Ability to accurately assess weight, height, body composition, and energy balance.
Knowledge of eating disorder/disordered eating signs and symptoms.
Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy, including interviewing and education techniques.
Self-motivation and ability to work independently.
Excellent time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
Familiar with a sports team environment, day-to-day business
Competence with nutrient analysis, word processing, and presentation software.
Compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Knowledge of resting metabolic rate, energy expenditure, VO2 max, and lactate threshold measurements.
Knowledge of food service quality and safety procedures
