Job OverviewAniLocus is seeking a highly qualified and experienced

Attending Veterinarian

with certifications in Laboratory Animal Research to oversee the health and welfare of all animals used in our research programs. The Attending Veterinarian will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of animal care and compliance with all regulatory requirements. This role requires a deep commitment to animal welfare, strong leadership skills, and extensive knowledge of veterinary practices in a research setting.

Responsibilities

Oversee and manage the health and welfare of laboratory animals, including routine health checks, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical procedures.

Develop and implement animal care and use protocols in compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., AAALAC, USDA, OLAW).

Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations regarding the use of animals in research.

Provide veterinary medical services, including emergency care, to all laboratory animals.

Develop and oversee the implementation of disease prevention and health monitoring programs.

Conduct regular inspections of animal facilities to ensure compliance with all relevant standards and guidelines.

Serve as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and participate in protocol review, program review, and facility inspections.

Train and supervise animal care staff and researchers in proper animal handling, care, and use procedures.

Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal health and treatment.

Collaborate with researchers to develop and refine animal models, ensuring humane and ethical treatment of animals.

Stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine and laboratory animal science through continuing education and professional development.

Skills & Qualifications

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree from an accredited institution.

Certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or eligibility to obtain certification.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine, preferably in a research setting.

Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding the use of animals in research.

Strong clinical and surgical skills with experience in a variety of laboratory animal species.

Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with researchers, animal care staff, and regulatory agencies.

Commitment to the humane treatment and welfare of research animals.

Working Conditions:

The position requires working in a laboratory setting with exposure to animals, biological materials, and laboratory chemicals.

Some evening, weekend, or holiday work may be required based on animal care needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a GLP-compliant environment.

Experience with rodents, small animals, and nonhuman primates.

Advanced degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in a related field.

Previous experience as an Attending Veterinarian or in a similar leadership role.

Salary and Benefits

Salary:

$26,000-104,000 USD. Negotiable and based on experience, qualifications, and market rates for Germantown, Maryland.
