Research Scientist (Process Engineering and Safety), ISCE2)

A*STAR, Emory, Texas, United States, 75440

Purpose of Job:

A research scientist is needed to develop detailed ammonia-hydrogen facility designs as base cases and parametric study for HAZOP, FMEA and QRA. These assessments will form the basis for the identification of critical scenarios needed to model and simulate toxic dispersion, fire and deflagration/detonation. The work will entail the development of relationship-ontology, cause-consequence model for automated HAZOP and Generative AI-assisted FMEA. ISCE2 is looking for a highly self-driven and meticulous individual who has the strong ability to multi-task in modelling/simulation and coding/programming with good time and project management skills to deliver results under tight timelines.

Key Accountabilities:

Review and collect chemical process safety information from literature and industry collaborators.

Develop an ontology of chemical process safety with implementation as knowledge graph.

Conduct simulations using industry standard software (e.g. ASPEN PLUS, PHAST/Safeti).

Coding, troubleshooting, and debugging. Testing the code by solving multiple case studies of different levels of complexities.

Presentation and sharing of knowledge regularly i.e. communicate effectively (written and orally) on project findings and status to internal and external stakeholders.

Consult and engage stakeholders i.e. industry/academic collaborators within the project.

Results documentation and writing for publications, patents, etc.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor/Master/PhD in Engineering (preferably with Chemical Engineering or Applied Chemistry background). Other safety related fields will also be considered.

Experience with programming languages like Python, Matlab, etc. and Large Language Models are essential.

Experience with modelling and simulation is essential with familiarity in chemical process simulation software (e.g.; Aspen Plus, HYSYS, etc.), safety modelling software (Phast/Safeti etc) and graph database software (e.g., Neo4J) an added advantage.

Practical/industry experience with Process Safety, Fire/Explosion Hazard and Risk Assessment is advantageous.

Willingness to learn new skills, self-motivated, able to work under pressure/tight timelines with minimal supervision and with a general high sensitivity to safety.
