Hastings Insurance is seeking a Legal & Litigation Manager to join its Corporate Legal team! This is a great opportunity for an experienced legal professional to lead our corporate litigation function and ensure this area of the business is aligned with our overall corporate plan and strategy.

Position OverviewThe Litigation and Legal Manager provides corporate litigation and legal leadership that is aligned with the Company’s five-year strategic plan as well as the Company’s mission. The Senior Staff Counsel will manage corporate and mass-tort litigation (Corporate Litigation) and act as the Chief Legal Officer’s assistant counsel as needed, including, without limitation, in government affairs, governance, regulatory compliance, and contract management.

On an operational basis, the position is responsible for leading, through others, the Corporate Litigation team. The team is responsible for assessing Corporate Litigation liability, setting appropriate reserves, managing outside counsel, and supporting case settlement, disposition, and appeals.

Position Location & Work Format

Employees must be able to work at our Hastings, Michigan corporate headquarters, either daily or in a "hybrid" arrangement of on-site and remote work.

Generally, this role will work within our standard office hours of Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

Corporate Litigation Manager

The incumbent has 5-7 direct reports, which include claim professionals and administrative support personnel. In addition, this role:

Is responsible for overall supervision of the Corporate Litigation team, including coaching, training, performance management, and hiring/termination recommendations.

Manages hired outside counsel and other external professionals and provides strategic direction for the appropriate adjudication of Corporate Litigation, ensuring that litigation is resolved in an equitable and cost-effective manner.

Manages initial and continuing reserves for Corporate Litigation to ensure accurate and adequate reserving practices are consistently followed.

Monitors performance and reviews open and closed Corporate Litigation to ensure that litigation has been properly prepared for adjudication or settled most advantageously.

Acts as an expert resource to others in the Claims department regarding coverage issues, reserves, exposure, settlement value, counsel management, and litigation strategy.

Frequent contact with agents, insureds, vendors, other external stakeholders, and several levels of management and staff within Claim, Accounting, Underwriting, and Marketing.

Travel is required monthly to attend attorney conferences, voluntary settlement conferences, mediations, hearings, and other courthouse events.

Corporate Legal Activities

Leads and manages legal matters as directed by the Chief Legal Officer, including without limitation:

Legal research and data analysis

Outside counsel evaluation and management

Government affairs and trade association activities.

Corporate governance, policy formation, ethics code formation, training, and enforcement.

Enterprise Risk Management

Contract Management

Supports all Human Resources functions regarding Corporate Litigation personnel.

Manages Expenses

Reviews and approves expense reports of direct reports.

Reviews and approves counsel and third-party professional engagement terms and invoices; and

Reviews and approves all other invoices within the scope of management.

Proficiency and continuous improvement in data analysis, case valuation, and overall litigation portfolio strategy

Stays current on legal, liability, judicial, legislative, regulatory, insurance industry, and competition activity.

Actively participates in professional development, including continuing education and self-improvement.

Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.

Candidate Requirements & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, law degree and insurance education required.

CPCU, CIC, API, or AIS designations are preferred.

A minimum of three years experience in claim and litigation management or relevant insurance operations is required.

Three years minimum of management experience is preferred.

Demonstrated ability to lead through others.

Knowledge of policy forms, coverages, and reserving best practices.

Ability to analyze situations, develop alternative courses of action, and recommend a course.

Demonstrated computer and operating system skills, including proficient use of claim management systems and Microsoft Office products.

Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication ability required.
