Academic Tutor for First Generation Students
Reality Changers prepares youth to become first generation college graduates and agents of change in their communities. This is accomplished through careful mentorship, academic enrichment, and college knowledge. Tutors play an instrumental role in helping students raise their GPAs, overcome academic and socio-emotional challenges, and prepare their college applications.Reality Changers is seeking volunteers to serve as academic tutors and mentors for 8th through 12th graders in their college readiness program. Volunteers work with 8th - 11th graders on academic subject tutoring, provide mentorship, and build age-appropriate, positive relationships with students.Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes
Time Commitment:
Two hours once a week for a minimum of four months from September to December (with the opportunity to extend through May 2025) on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 7:30pm to 9:00pm.Onboarding Process:
All volunteers must fill out an
application , successfully clear a background check, submit proof of a negative TB test, and attend a virtual orientation. This usually takes less than two weeks.Required Skills/Experience:
A high school diploma is required, as well as some subject area knowledge (in writing, English, history, math, and/or science).Desired Skills/Experience:
Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or otherwise working with youth ages 13 - 18 is highly desired.Physical Requirements:
Tutoring takes place in indoor classrooms, seated. Volunteers may be asked to stand, write on a white board, or carry supplies (less than 15 pounds). Ability to use a laptop computer is preferred. This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is wheelchair accessible.Attire:
Business casual, age-appropriate attire.Note:
Volunteers should enjoy engaging with high school students and possess a certain degree of maturity.Reality Changers
