UCSF Research Specialist - Tenthorey labThe Tenthorey lab, located in Genentech Hall at the sunny UCSF Mission Bay campus, is seeking a motivated candidate to join our growing and collaborative team, which is focused on understanding how innate immune antiviral proteins evolve to prevent viral infection.The successful candidate will have the opportunity to carry out their own research project, under the supervision of a senior researcher in the lab, and will earn authorship on any scientific papers to which they contribute.We are interested in hiring a specialist at either the Junior, Assistant, or Associate level, depending on qualifications. This is a full-time position with at least a 2-year time commitment.Junior specialists must possess a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related discipline or at least four years of research experience. Experience working in a molecular biology or biochemistry laboratory setting (including lab-based course work) is a prerequisite. This would be an ideal position for a candidate seeking to gain laboratory research experience prior to applying to graduate or medical training of their choice.Specialists at the Assistant level must possess a master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related discipline, or a bachelor's degree with three or more years of experience working in a biochemistry or molecular biology research laboratory.Associate level should possess a master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related discipline, or 5-10 years of experience working in a biochemistry or molecular biology research laboratory. This would be an ideal position for an experienced researcher seeking to gain laboratory research experience using state-of-the-art techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, and evolutionary biology and contribute to the establishment of an exciting research program.This position will include the following responsibilities:Identifying and characterizing novel variants of antiviral immune proteins, using an evolution-guided approach that our lab has pioneered and is developing further. The work may involve molecular biology (e.g., cloning, DNA purification, NGS sequencing), tissue culture, virology, flow cytometry, and/or biochemistry (e.g., protein purification, binding assays).Lab management, ordering lab supplies, and maintaining equipment.Participation in lab meetings, including presentation of data.Based on the interest and ability of the specialist, s/he may also be responsible for the development and execution of independent research projects.Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities. Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.Requirements:Degree (completed before start date) and laboratory experience:

Junior specialist: B.S. or B.A. (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or related discipline or at least four years of research experience.
