YesJob Summary:The Department of Horticulture invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Assistant Professor of Practice: Organic Tree Fruit and Nut Specialist position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.This position focuses on organic pome fruit, stone fruit, and nut production, emphasizing regionally adapted cultivars, abiotic stress management, organic pest and nutrient management, weed management, climate resilience, and/or other relevant topics identified during needs assessments. The clientele for this position includes farmers and other agricultural professionals currently using or interested in sustainable, regenerative, and certified Organic farming practices to produce tree fruits and nuts in Oregon.Key Responsibilities:60% – Extension and Related AssignmentsEducational programming will focus on certified Organic, ecological and regenerative tree fruit and nut production on farms of all scales.Design, develop and implement organic tree fruit and nut production educational programs for farmers and other agricultural professionals.Conduct needs assessments to determine the educational and applied research needs of assigned clientele.20% – Applied ResearchConduct applied research within relevant agro-ecozones to pragmatically address clientele needs.Secure external funding to conduct applied research, demonstrations, and educational programs.5% – ServiceServe as an effective team member with the Center and wider University community.Provide service to academic home, college and university through committee service and leadership.What You Will Need:PhD in horticulture, soil science, crop science, entomology, plant pathology or another discipline that addresses the duties of the position. Degree must be completed by start date.Demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative team member within the Organic Agriculture Program and with other professionals.Demonstrated experience with and/or specialized knowledge of perennial crop production.Demonstrated experience with Extension or other informal education delivery methods.Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment and maintain it throughout employment.
