The

Department of Theatre Arts at Baylor University

seeks an experienced leader and outstanding senior scholar and/or creative artist to serve as

Department Chair

beginning August 2025. The appointment will be at the advanced Associate Professor or Professor level, with tenure. The Department is a thriving, productive department with 20 faculty members, serving 130 undergraduate majors and 6-8 graduate students.

The Chair will lead a strong and collaborative faculty committed to continuing success in undergraduate and graduate teaching, maintaining high levels of traditional and creative scholarship, and fostering academic service to the Department, college, and university.

We welcome applicants with research interests in any field of Theatre Arts, including Theatre History and Theory, Acting, Directing and/or Design. The successful candidate should be able to develop, articulate, and implement a clear strategic path for advancing research and teaching goals in the Department of Theatre Arts, particularly within the context of Baylor's established R1 status.

The Theatre Arts department produces 6-8 shows during the year, with performances attended by university and community members. Shows range in style from musicals to classics to avant-garde modern and contemporary work. In addition, the Department has an internal workshop performance series every Friday.

The Department promotes a research and learning environment in which individuals of differing perspectives and backgrounds pursue academic excellence in a culture of mutual respect. Department faculty actively engage in traditional and creative scholarship, publishing in peer-reviewed books and journals and performing, directing, and designing in professional creative venues.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have an MFA or PhD degree in Theatre or related field.

The successful candidate will have:

Demonstrated experience in academic administration and strategic planning, broadly defined;

Research (creative or scholarly) accomplishments, funding, and international visibility consistent with those required for an appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor;

Experience and success as a classroom instructor and mentor;

The ability to develop, articulate, and implement a strategic vision for further advancing the research and education programs in the Department.
