Pathologist Assistant

A pathologists' assistant in the anatomical pathology department is responsible for preparation, dissection and processing of anatomic pathology specimens. Other responsibilities include participation in intraoperative consultations, gross room maintenance, and specimen management tasks. This individual is also responsible for postmortem examinations, including organ evisceration and dissection.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Responsible for accurate specimen identification, accessioning and requisitioning - maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.

Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, New York State and Joint Commission regulations, HIPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines.

Describe gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, providing a general, logical and factual gross description - CPT 88300-88309.

Load cassettes into tissue processor using appropriate program(s).

Maintains adequate inventory and all checklists and is able to troubleshoot when temperatures are out of range and assist with daily, weekly and monthly checklist completion.

Required Skills and Experience:

Education: A graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program or Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, biopsy or related field, with required previous related experience including surgical pathology, gross dissection and surgical specimens, and frozen sections.

Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities - acquire a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education per year.

Licensure: NYS Pathologist Assistant license.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred.

Good written and oral communication skills preferred.

Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes.

Physical Requirements:

Able to stand for long periods of time; requires manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination. Able to perform light lifting, up to 40 pounds.
