Overview:

We are hiring a motivated Associate-level Linux Systems Engineer who will focus on supporting and maintaining Linux server and storage systems! Your responsibilities will include maintaining system health, assisting in analyzing system performance, and ensuring all activities are documented in accordance with customer requirements. This position resides in the Research Systems Engineering team of the Research IT Infrastructure group in the Research Computing Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Our team is dedicated to supporting the lab's goals through robust systems engineering, integration, and support tailored specifically for our research community. We manage a variety of critical infrastructures including mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other pivotal services.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist in troubleshooting and resolving issues related to Linux servers.Collaborate on multiple projects with multiple stakeholders.Provide support for NAS storage systems under supervision.Install, configure, and manage Linux RHEL derivative systems across both physical and virtual environments.Assist in designing and implementing custom system solutions.Support the management and optimization of VMware clusters.Collaborate with developers to ensure optimal operation of customer applications.Conduct system upgrades and ensure comprehensive system backups and recovery processes under guidance.Document all processes as mandated by customer requirements.Offer basic Linux support and monitor system performance.Administer container technologies with supervision.Install and maintain various software solutions, including commercial and open-source packages (e.g., Apache, MySQL, Postgres, PHP, ZFS) under supervision.Stay updated on software patches for system and third-party software, applying them as necessary to maintain system security and stability.Consult on the selection and procurement of both hardware and software.Ensure secure and efficient system operations in compliance with organizational standards and policies.Liaise with other engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.Interact with local bargaining unit personnel for hardware installation and repairs beyond vendor scopes.Embody and promote the laboratory's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service, fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace.Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. A BS in information technology, computer engineering, computer science, business, or a related field of study and two (2) to four (4) years of aligned professional experience is required for consideration.One (1) to two (2) years of experience with Linux server administration.Familiarity with managing VMware clusters and NAS storage systems.Proficiency in scripting with BASH and Python.Preferred Qualifications:

Linux Command Line Proficiency: A strong command of the Linux command line is fundamental. Candidates should be adept at navigating the file system, managing user accounts, and performing system configurations.Scripting and Automation: Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, or Perl is crucial for automating tasks, customizing solutions, and troubleshooting issues effectively. Experience with automation tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.Containerization and Orchestration: Knowledge of container technologies like Docker and Kubernetes is essential for managing scalable and portable application environments.Virtualization: Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V, including managing and optimizing virtual environments.System Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Skills in monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios) and a methodical approach to troubleshooting are important for maintaining system stability and minimizing downtime.Security and Compliance: Understanding security principles and practices, including system hardening, vulnerability assessments, and compliance with security standards.Networking Knowledge: A solid grasp of networking concepts and protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPNs, is critical for ensuring robust and efficient network performance.Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Effective communication and teamwork abilities are vital, as the role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams and explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Continuous Learning and Adaptability: A commitment to staying updated with the latest IT trends, tools, and best practices. This includes a proactive approach to learning and adapting to new technologies and methodologies.
