Senior Equipment Operator Solid Waste

The purpose of this position is to assist the assigned department with projects by operating different types of equipment and maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Transports, sets up, and operates equipment such as front-end loader, knuckle boom, roll off truck, rear loader, dump truck, etc. to perform daily routes to collect waste or clean up debris.

Performs inspection or preoperational checklist on all equipment and determines and/or conducts preventative maintenance and cleaning.

Generates and completes all assigned work orders and documents daily work activities.

Provides information to customers as requested.

Supervises staff by prioritizing and assigning work, ensuring staff are trained and follow policies and procedures, and maintaining a healthy and safe working environment in the absence of a Solid Waste Crew Supervisor.

Supplemental Functions:

Performs other similar duties as required.

Licensing and Certifications:

Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (Class A, Truck with Trailer)

PLEASE NOTE:

Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, talking.

Very Heavy: Exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 - 100 pounds frequently, or from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.

Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, physical hazards.

Required Skills:

Reading and interpreting data;

Operating a computer and applicable software applications;

Applying customer service principles;

Operating equipment and tools;

Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Required Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency, with at least three (3) years of experience operating equipment; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Qualifications:

Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent or ten (10) years equivalent work experience.

Some post-secondary education is preferred.

Must be able to learn and apply a variety of software applications.

Must have accurate keyboarding skills.

Prior experience in a retail service environment.

Some call center and member service experience is preferred.
