The Neuroscience TRC is committed to development of transformational therapeutics for patients with neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. We have built a network of external partnerships across multiple treatment modalities (small molecules, biologics and RNA targeting) that leverage our leadership in protein homeostasis and inflammation to attach neurological diseases. Internal research focuses on protein homeostasis by direct and ligand directed degradation, neuroinflammation and remyelination. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following approaches: Disease modifying therapies for neurodegenerative, neuro-inflammatory and neuromuscular diseases; CNS targets that modulate protein homeostasis, protein clearance, inflammation and reduce or eliminate toxic protein production; Emerging technologies (RNA, DNA targeting, gene regulation, editing and replacement, vector optimization) that when matched to underlying disease genetics can deliver a precision medicine portfolio with a high probability of success to address unmet medical needs; Targets in orphan/rare neurological and neuromuscular diseases. Use approaches in cellular, preclinical and translational tools and technologies such as multiomics in tissue and fluid samples to identify novel biomarkers to track neurodegenerative diseases.

Position Summary: This position is based in the San Diego, CA site and reports to the Scientific Senior Director, Systems Neuroscience (in Cambridge, MA). The Senior Scientist will be part of the Neuroscience Thematic Research Center (Neuro-TRC). The emphasis will be on ensuring program team deliverables as outlined in a disciplined biomarker plan for clinical development. Consistent with the overall Neuroscience TRC externalized model, the individual may also guide one or more novel biomarker development projects. These efforts will focus on the context of use in neurodegeneration with a focus on movement disorders, including but not limited to Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and multiple sclerosis. The Senior Scientist will be interfacing with internal and external partners for the development of novel biomarkers to provide quantitative outcome measures. To accomplish these tasks, the Senior Scientist will work in the lab independently and in collaborative efforts with internal in vitro/ex vivo and in vivo groups. In addition, the Senior Scientist might also work with internal and external contractors as necessary (CROs, academics, consortia in the precompetitive space), data analysis to ultimately ensure delivery of novel biomarkers, which have a potential to deliver clinically meaningful data. The individual will also contribute to innovation projects focused on generating pilot data that informs feasibility of new outcome measures transformational to the field. The successful candidate will have a well-established track record of constructively interacting within project sub-teams (e.g., clinical research physicians, preclinical toxicology, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic line functions, statisticians, computational biologists), and with contract research organizations and other external experts to deliver science that supports the development of medicines to patients in need. Position Responsibilities In the role as a Senior Scientist within the Systems Neuroscience group, the ideal candidate will: Work in the lab independently and also in a collaborative environment with minimal guidance in designing experiments to explore, develop and validate novel fluid and tissue based biomarkers. Utilize human and animal model data to support mechanism of action/validation studies for both clinical-stage drug candidates as well as potential new drug targets for neuroscience. Aligning with the Systems Neuroscience team, design and oversee implementation of translational activities in proof-of-concept clinical studies conducted by clinical program teams Provide guidance on clinical and nonclinical biomarker data analysis to Global Biometrics, and Informatics and Predictive Sciences Work closely with the Systems Neuroscience lead to evaluate external potential partners (contract research organizations, start-ups, academics, consortia, foundations) for quality of work, data analysis and delivery, determining high priority data collection activities. Aid in developing relevant scope of work and contracts to support the above efforts Prepare and deliver presentations within BMS sub-team meetings and externally when feasible. Develop/maintain knowledge of the current literature, propose novel concepts and targets. Publish in scientific journals and present in scientific meetings as aligned with the Systems Neuroscience objectives Experience = Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree 7+ years of academic and / or industry experience Or Master’s Degree 5+ years of academic and / or industry experience Or Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences 2+ of academic and / or industry experience Preferred Qualifications: Master’s in life sciences with specialization in cell and molecular biology Degreeand 5+ years of academic and / or industry experienceor D.O, M.D, Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences and 2+ years of academic and / or industry experience Embraces being highly accountable for timelines and deliverables Solid understanding of the principles of clinical study design and execution Detailed knowledge and track record (as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals) in biomechanical modeling of human function, especially movements Familiarity with and strategic use of methodologic approaches for analyzing individual and population-based datasets so as to inform feasibility and proof-of-concept study designs Experience in scaling models as soon as there is conviction of value added Significant experience developing written proposals, scope of work and contracts to support collaborative research; successful track record of obtaining research grants General understanding of drug development Excellent oral and written presentation skills Ability to work well within a dynamic matrixed team environment The starting compensation for this job is a range from $109,000.00–$150,700.00, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).
