DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

TITLE:

Director of Curriculum and Instruction

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction will be responsible for facilitating the design and implementation of a district wide curriculum, observing instructional practices, training teachers and staff, ordering new instructional materials, content specific scope and sequence, and ensuring the district curriculum meets all state guidelines and federal regulations, fostering continuous improvement with strategic school support, and facilitating effective communication across all levels of the organization.

QUALIFICATION:Master's degree with a major in Educational Administration or related field.Certification in Educational Leadership, School Principal or Professional School Principal, or Administration and Supervision.Five (5) years successful teaching and three (3) years administrative experience in public education or other equivalent experience as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent.Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Assists in the formulation of a philosophy and objectives for the instructional program.Coordinates activities of elementary and secondary education programs.Coordinates activities related to library media services, textbooks, guidance/testing, professional development, accreditation, and resource and grant development.Directs the organization and supervision of summer programs including summer school.Assists with the preparation of the system's budget as related to curriculum and instruction services.Directs the implementation of fiscal policies and procedures related to curriculum, instruction and staff development services including short- and long-range fiscal planning, approval of purchases, and communication of fiscal information as necessary.Assists the instructional program in the school system's alternative learning progress in conjunction with Student Services Department.Adheres to federal, state, local, and Board rules and regulations.Ensure that curricula are aligned to state standards; monitor coherence in student learning through continuous alignment of standards, assessment, accountability and intervention practices.Interface with governmental agencies, business and civic organizations, and the community to provide needed information and promote the school's educational initiatives.Recommends the addition of new courses, grades placement of courses, credit allowances for courses and graduation requirements.Maintains a current curriculum manual to show graduation requirements, approved courses, credit allowed, and any pertinent information useful to students and staff.Accepts accountability for student academic achievement and program improvement.Assumes responsibility for reviewing and evaluating results of district-wide testing programs, and for other evaluative measures used by the schools.Lead and work with school improvement initiatives that close student achievement gaps between racial, ethnic and economic groups.Observes teachers in the classroom upon request of principals and offers insights for the enhancement of the teaching-learning situation.Maintains a curriculum library for staff use.Supervise, evaluate, and hold accountable the performance and professionalism of assigned staff.Prepare and deliver effective presentations to district staff and Board of Education.Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.REQURIED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

Knowledge in the areas of general administration and staff development.Ability to supervise and evaluate personnel assigned to the area of general administration.Knowledge of current trends and practices in elementary and secondary education, exceptional students, professional and technical education.Skills in problem solving.Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal forms.Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settings.Ability to demonstrate expertise in facilitating PLCs to promote collaborative learning and sharing of best practices among school leaders.Ability to use effective public relations skills necessary for the successful implementation of new programs, the coordination of committees, and to maintain productive relationships among colleagues and those supervised.Ability to be effective and efficient with Microsoft Office Programs such as Word, Excel, Publisher and Access.Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education policy for evaluation of position.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :

Salary and work year to be established by the Board. Salary in adherence and compliance with approved salary schedule.
