The Vice President, Southern California Local Advocacy oversees a dynamic team in executing strategic advocacy, political, and communications campaigns focused on charter authorizations, renewals, and policy implementation across Imperial, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino or San Diego counties.Overview of Responsibilities:

The Vice President of Southern California Local Advocacy leads a dedicated team in supporting over 250 charter schools across the region. This role is pivotal in developing and executing comprehensive policy, advocacy, and political strategies to defend and advance the interests of charter schools. The Vice President will build and nurture relationships with charter school leaders, crafting strategies that ensure successful renewals and access to essential resources. Managing a team that collaborates closely with charter operators, community partners, and district and county officials, the Vice President will shape policy, influence the political landscape, and cultivate a supportive ecosystem for high-quality, achievement gap-closing charter schools. Reporting to the Chief Member Advocacy and Engagement Officer, this position requires a dynamic leader with a deep commitment to educational equity, a strong background in advocacy, coalition building, policy analysis, and team leadership.Team Lead

: Manage three direct reports, serve as the internal advocate for the team and the Southern California charter community, and drive collaboration across internal teams and external stakeholders to achieve ambitious results.Member Engagement

: Serve as the primary contact for charter leaders across the region as they confront state and local policy issues that affect their schools. Keep members informed at all inflection points in the policymaking process; lead on charter renewals; and bring the charter community together to act collectively, when necessary, on important policy and political issues. Lead staff members in this complex, relationship-building work and contributing to member satisfaction within the Southern California region.Member Management

: Use of Salesforce to track member communication, point of contacts, meetings and school visits.Policy Making and Advocacy

: Manage the strategy to influence charter-related policy and implementation matters at key charter school authorizers, with a particular focus on the Orange County Board of Education, Riverside County Board of Education, San Bernardino County Board of Education, San Diego Unified School District and San Diego County Board of Education.State Policy Advocacy

: Support state policy advocacy by connecting legislative and regulatory priorities/issues to charter school members. Inform state policy development and legislative priorities with key insights from charter school members. Complement state policy advocacy by coordinating local legislative outreach with charter school communities.Relationship Building

: Cultivate relationships with local district, county and state elected officials, local charter leaders, community partners, and senior charter staff to support charter schools and the flexibility necessary to operate effective and high-quality charter school programs for K-12 students.Coalition Building

: Engage as a partner with aligned community organizations to advance access to quality public education.Political Engagement:

Engage in partisan and non-partisan electoral work under the umbrella of CCSA Advocates, including supporting with identification of potential candidate for local board races.Communications:

Lead the creation, support, and distribution of communication materials such as newsletters to inform members and stakeholders about advocacy efforts and policy developments. Support the Public Relations and Creative Services Team by seeking and elevating member stories for earned and owned media amplification.Organizational Leadership:

Collaborate with senior leaders across the organization on any issues affecting the Southern California region and its charter leaders. Support CCSA-sponsored events and activities as needed, including CCSA’s annual Charter Schools Conference.Travel:

This position requires some travel throughout the region for internal and external meetings, school visits and board meetings (about 30%).What Success Looks LikeThe Vice President, Local Advocacy, plays a critical leadership role in the organization, ensuring that CCSA’s members in the region are engaged with the Association, supported in their individual school advocacy needs, and organized to act

collectively with other members to achieve policy and advocacy wins aligned with CCSA’s strategic plan and on behalf of

charter school students. This position also plays a critical role in sustaining and growing CCSA’s membership base. To achieve success in this role, qualified candidates will be able to consistently meet and exceed these goals:Establish and secure a positive local policy environment to ensure charter schools have equitable access to resources (e.g. facilities, funding, and technology) and schools receive fair and transparent oversight.Foster the development of an engaged charter community where local leaders are essential drivers of key policy priorities by participating in the decision-making process about local advocacy strategy and inform and engage their communities in collective actions to support positive policy development.Establish priority partnerships among elected officials, community leaders, and charter operators to ensure high-quality public schools are available to traditionally underserved populations.Manage CCSA’s relationships with members in the region to ensure quality supports are provided to the member

The selected candidate will be offered a starting salary based on years of aligned experience and any specialized training or certifications (if preferred for the position).
