Atrium Health, Winston Salem, North Carolina, United States, 27104

Overview

The Department of Surgery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, NC is seeking a faculty member at the Assistant Professor level to join our breast surgery program. Faculty rank and financial compensation is commensurate with experience and credentials. The applicant’s main clinical focus should include breast surgery with knowledge of breast-conserving surgery, nipple and skin-sparing mastectomies, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and axillary node dissection.

Candidates should be board certified/eligible, a graduate of an SSO/ASBrS-approved breast surgery fellowship program, and eligible for an unrestricted State of North Carolina medical license. The successful candidate should be able to perform breast and axillary surgery, participate in a multidisciplinary breast clinic with medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, and be committed to excellence in quality and patient safety. In addition, the candidate will actively participate in the education of general surgery residents, fellows, and medical students. Interest in clinical and translational research is also encouraged and supported by robust infrastructure.

The new hire would join nine clinically active faculty members of Surgical Oncology, see patients with melanoma, sarcoma, and endocrine tumors, as well as the full spectrum of GI and breast malignancy. The breast service is an integral component of the Surgical Oncology Service and continues to successfully draw patients from throughout the region.

The BCC (Breast Care Center) is led by Dr. Howard-McNatt, with support from Drs. Levine and Charity Glass, along with three mid-levels. The breast cancer multidisciplinary clinic (MDC) is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, including surgical, medical, and radiation oncology supported by nurse navigators, plastic surgeons, genetic counselors, and research nurses. Survivorship clinics are run by the midlevels.

The BCC had its NAPBC certification renewed in early 2022, with full continuing accreditation of the center. The breast surgery effort strongly supports the research efforts of the DOT in the Cancer Center, participating in NRG and Alliance trials, investigator-initiated trials, as well as the I-SPY trial and “RECAST” trial for ductal carcinoma in situ.
