THE OPPORTUNITY

The next Vice President for Advancement (VPA) at Harvey Mudd College (HMC) will join an institution in a healthy fiscal and operational position and with an unparalleled reputation for excellence and academic rigor in a unified STEM and liberal arts ecosystem. The new VPA will have an important voice in both the College’s strategic planning and its upcoming comprehensive fundraising campaign.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE:

The Vice President for Advancement is a dynamic, innovative and experienced fundraising strategist responsible for cultivating and orchestrating the College's advancement programs and activities. The Vice President will strategically build and sustain long-term relationships with current and prospective major donors and other institutional partners. This position will play a key role in advancing alumni, parent and donor relations.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree required with seven to ten years of successful advancement experience in a senior administrative leadership role in an academic environment that includes overseeing fundraising activities.

Robust record of accomplishments and exceptional fundraising experience, specifically including donor targeting and prospecting, solicitation process management, and direct solicitations.

Ability to develop institutional strategies that successfully advance reputational and financial goals of the College.

Demonstrated success in cultivating relationships with prospective and current donors and in securing major philanthropic gifts.

Proven successful leadership as a supervisor, successful in motivating, directing and managing staff and leading fundraising teams.

Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic fundraising plans and manage a comprehensive campaign.

Proven ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Advancement staff, College leadership, trustees, faculty, alumni and other constituents.

A diplomatic, collaborative demeanor; the political savvy to navigate a complex culture.

Exceptional organizational, operational, problem-solving and management skills.

Demonstrated financial and management skills.

A track record as an outstanding communicator, in writing as well as orally.

Knowledge of best practices and trends in fundraising, campaign management, stewardship, and alumni and parent relations.

Ability to work effectively in a diverse college community and with diverse donor constituencies.

Proven record of being proactive, self-motivated, and goal-directed.

DESIRED OUTCOMES

Establish short and long-term strategic fundraising goals and develop plans that provide for steady growth in external support of the College's Strategic Plan.

Lead the strategic planning, design and execution of a comprehensive campaign that aligns with and supports the College's mission.

Research, identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and individual contributors.

Manage and oversee the department's budget; review the prior year's performance and establish new fiscal goals.

Serve on standing and ad hoc committees as directed by the President.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS AND DIVISIONS

Reports to the President of Harvey Mudd College.

Provide key perspective and counsel as a member of the College's senior leadership team.

Develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with the current and past members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, students, parents and other internal and external constituents.

Provide leadership and management for the overall operations of the Office of College Advancement (OCA).

COMPENSATION RANGE

Harvey Mudd College anticipates that the Vice President for Advancement’s annual salary range will likely fall between $340,000 - $360,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
