OverviewThe Graduate Medical Education (GME) Director assumes responsibility for the GME operations at the Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center (NHPMC) under the direction of the Associate Designated Institutional Official (DIO). They direct accreditation and regulatory activities and serve as a consultant for GME Program Directors and Coordinators. They direct and manage the GME program review process for all GME programs. The Director serves as the liaison with ACGME and related organizations to ensure readiness for all RRC and institutional reviews.

This position oversees all financial and administrative functions of the Office of Graduate Medical Education whose mission is to ensure the institution and training programs are in compliance with accreditation standards and hospital policies and to ensure that the leadership and resources are available for department chairs, program directors, faculty, residency coordinators and trainees on issues pertaining to graduate medical education. Oversight includes monitoring the daily activities of the organization's graduate medical education (GME) programs, the regular assessment of the quality of the GME programs, the performance of the residents, the use of outcome assessment results for program improvement and the creation of reports supporting the programs' accreditation.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s and Master's degree, required; Doctorate Degree, preferred.

Experience: 3-5 years experience in Graduate Medical Education, healthcare education or in an academic health care setting required; 2-3 years teaching and evaluation of the adult learner required; and 5-7 years strong leadership skills and qualities. Proven ability in budget development and monitoring, quality improvement, problem solving, strategic planning and interpersonal skills. Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence required.

ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions

The Director of Graduate Medical Education has the following responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Associate Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and the GME Administrator to manage Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) institutional reviews, monitor regulations and changes, provide updates and resolve citations through the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

Evaluate program compliance with NHPMC policies and the ACGME requirements in the context of the Next Accreditation System (NAS) model. Update the House Staff Manual annually reflecting regulatory and process revisions.

Collaborate with graduate medical education programs to identify best practices and standardize common processes related to curricular, evaluation and process needs.

Collaborate with program directors, physician faculty and residents to design learning experiences based on needs that lead to measurable educational outcomes and support the clinical learning environment.

Support the Resident Forum and serve as an advocate on resident grievance and appeal matters.

Manage contracts between NHPMC residency programs and outside institutions with the assistance of legal counsel (e.g. affiliation agreements, preceptor agreements, etc.).

Assist with preparation of annual reports, including the Annual Institutional Review.

Review budgets, develop strategies to ensure compliance and approve funding requests.

Facilitate and support simulation tools in the education of residents.

With the assistance of the DIO and Program Directors, create and manage a Dashboard of important metrics and regularly review and support progress toward goals.

Manage relevant databases e.g. National Residency Match Program and residency management system e.g. New Innovations.

Possess the knowledge and experience of designing systems to optimize effectiveness and efficiency of office operations preferably using LEAN methodology.
