Job Description - Assistant Professor, Geosciences (FAC003230)DescriptionThe Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown invites applications for a tenure-track position in the area of Structural Geology, starting fall 2024. UHD is a teaching university and tenure-track faculty teach 21 contact hours over two long semesters. Applicants with experience in GIS/remote sensing and demonstrated potential for and commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds are strongly desired.Responsibilities:Teach lower-level and upper-level geoscience courses as needed.Curriculum and programmatic improvement.Establish a successful research program that actively engages undergraduate students.Seek external funding.Be active in student recruitment.Co-teach the summer capstone field course in central Colorado, as needed.Participation in assessment activities of the geology program.Engage in department, college, university, and professional service.QualificationsRequired Qualifications:Ph.D. in geology at the time of appointment.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in undergraduate teaching.Experience (teaching and/or utility) in Remote Sensing & GIS.Experience in online teaching.Experience in or passion for mentoring undergraduate students in research.Experience in teaching a field geology course.Demonstrated experience in seeking/obtaining external funding.Required Attachments by Candidate:Curriculum vitaCover letter/Letter of ApplicationStatement of teaching philosophy that emphasizes instructional strategies and student engagement and includes your experience/plan/interest in teaching non-traditional students in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environmentStatement of research interests and plans for developing a successful research program that includes undergraduate students and the application for external fundingA copy of all unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcriptsThree letters of recommendation (upon request).About University of Houston-Downtown:The second-largest university in Houston, the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is a comprehensive, four-year, urban university in the heart of downtown.
