The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, San Francisco, California, United States, 94199

Job Title:

Specialist in Molecular Biology of Neurons

Job Number:

78487

Location:

San Francisco, US

Job Description

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our neuroscience research institute aimed at defining mechanisms underlying motor neuron disease (ALS) and dementia. The IND is directed by Dr. Stanley Prusiner and is located at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus.

The Mordes Lab within the IND focuses on understanding how disruptions in protein homeostasis and RNA metabolism result in neurodegeneration, particularly in ALS and related diseases. The research involves patient-derived and CRISPR-edited pluripotent stem cell lines and detailed neuropathology examination of patient brains.

The specialist will engage in studies of human stem cell-derived neurons to model neurodegenerative diseases and related molecular biology assays. The successful applicant will be an experienced cell and molecular biology researcher with expertise in biomedical research and in vitro cell culture methods. The specialist will work as part of a team dedicated to advancing pre-clinical models of disease.

A two-year commitment is preferred; candidates must be able to make a one-year commitment.

Major Responsibilities:

Maintenance and manipulation of stem cell lines, differentiation of stem cells to neurons, and imaging/monitoring of cells via microscopy.

Perform molecular biology techniques including quantitative analysis of gene expression, purification of RNA and DNA, plasmid preparation, immunoblotting, and immunostaining.

Extract and perform quality control of nucleic acids and proteins from brain tissue samples.

Complete safety training and perform administrative duties for lab compliance.

Establish molecular biology techniques for the lab as projects evolve.

Maintain detailed lab records and perform analysis of results using software such as GraphPad Prism.

Support the intellectual design of research projects and contribute to the scientific community.

Personal Qualifications

High commitment to advancing biomedical research and career development.

Excellent record-keeping and organizational abilities.

Strong sense of responsibility with all lab duties.

Education and Training Qualifications:

Associate Specialist: Master’s degree or five to ten years of relevant experience.

Full Specialist: Terminal degree or ten or more years of relevant experience.

Technical Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in mammalian cell culture and experimental protocols.

Working knowledge of basic lab techniques and molecular biology methods.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and statistical tests.

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in human pluripotent stem cell maintenance and differentiation.

Biochemistry and molecular biology expertise including purification and analysis methods.

Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment. CV must state qualifications upon submission.
