The Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking a full-time employee as a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 for our Radionuclide Production Laboratory.

POSITION PURPOSEThis laboratory position involves research and production of radionuclides for medical and other applications. A primary objective of the position is to ensure the University of Washington Radionuclide Production Laboratory (UWRPL) can safely and reliably produce the radionuclide astatine-211 (211At) for use in targeted alpha therapy research at UW and the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. The position also involves production and shipment of radionuclides of interest to other institutions through the National Isotope Development Center (NIDC).

The position supports development of new processes for the production of high specific activity radionuclides, such as rhenium-186 and tin-117m. Additionally, this position is responsible for laboratory equipment maintenance, chemical inventory management, and laboratory safety compliance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESLaboratory Duties (85%)Conduct research in radionuclide production, which involves the design and fabrication of cyclotron targets, the development of methods for isolating the produced radionuclide and for recycling isotope enriched target materials.Work with the University of Washington Medical Cyclotron Facility in routine production of radionuclides in short supply for shipment to other institutions through the National Isotope Development Center.

Other Duties (15%)Assist in experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript and research proposal writing.Assist in training of students and Postdoctoral Scholars.Conduct routine laboratory housekeeping tasks.Manage and ensure laboratory setups and activities comply with EH&S and Radiation Safety requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSBachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field plus 3 years’ experience; OR equivalent combination of education/experience.Extensive knowledge and experience in handling of radioactive materials, including short-lived radionuclides.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Willingness and ability to rapidly learn and implement new techniques/instruments as required by the need of the research projects.Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills and the ability to balance work priorities.Experience in supervising trainees.Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONSBackground in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Automation, or related field that applies to cyclotron target development and radionuclide separation.Knowledge and experience with glovebox or hot cell techniques.Knowledge and experience with radioanalytical methods (radio-HPLC, radio-TLC, gamma-ray and/or alpha spectroscopy, etc.).Flexibility to work late hours or on weekends/holidays when required to finish a time-sensitive experiment.
