Full-timePOSITION SUMMARYThe Staff Accountant will assist in the daily operation of the Fiscal Department and is responsible for day-to-day grants management, general ledger maintenance, Accounts Payable/Receivable related journal entries, financial reporting, and assisting in audit preparation. The Staff Accountant provides technical guidance and reviews the work of the accounting clerk and is under the general supervision and technical guidance of the Chief Financial Officer.ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIESUtilize accounting software (ex: Abila MIP Fund Accounting)Maintain and update accounting records and filesMaintain accurate record of Fund BalancesInspect account books for efficiency and accuracyReconcile Bank, Credit Card, and Balance Sheet statement monthly and annuallyProvide technical guidance and review the work of the Accounting ClerkAnalyze budgets and create expense reportsAssist in Budget preparationRecommend journal entries to the ControllerTrack daily and weekly cash needsPerform vendor analysis and issue 1099sMaintain and update fixed assetsPrepare management (financials) and reports with analysis as neededAssist Controller conduct month-end and year-end closuresAssist Controller prepare documentation for external auditorsAssist Controller as neededKnowledge of payroll process (will be cross trained)Apply new accounting policies and ensure compliance with rules and regulationsKeep Controller well-informed of activities, pending issues, and potential problemsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSQualifications:Experience with Excel (advanced)Experience with AP, AR life cycleGreat organizational skillsResponsible for compliance with all applicable federal, state, municipal laws, statutes, or ordinancesA self-starter who can work independently and as a team member; who consistently demonstrates professionalism, courtesy, efficiency, excellent internal and external customer service, high ethical standards and behavior that contributes to harmonious relationshipsDemonstrated ability or willingness to work with culturally diverse populations, youth, and professionalsGAAP ExperienceEducation & Experience:Bachelor's Degree in accounting or related experience considered5+ years of accounting experience required, non-profit preferredConfidentiality:Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information adhering to HIPAA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, Privacy Act, and UAII policies and proceduresThis position has access to sensitive information, and a breach in confidentiality will be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including immediate terminationCommunication/ Interpersonal Skills:Possess the ability to communicate with others in a courteous and professional mannerExcellent oral and written communication skillsProficient in EnglishTechnology Skills:Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the positionProficiency in 10-keyWorking knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, PowerPointAccounting Software (MIP preferred)Other:Demonstrate ability to exercise a high level of judgment, accept supervision, and exercise a high level of accuracy and organizationAvailable and willing to travel as neededAvailable to work evening and weekend hours as neededAccuracy and attention to detail is a mustWillingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the positionPOSITION PREFERENCESExperience working with the American Indian/Alaskan Native communityExperience working with nonprofit organizations, community groups and performance-based government contracts.Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment characteristics described here represent those employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision.
