plays a crucial role in the financial management and reporting for the Independent Sector (IS). The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing various financial activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards. This position involves handling complex accounting tasks, preparing financial reports, and collaborating with other departments to support overall financial goals.WHAT YOU WILL BE DOINGBookkeeping: Lead the bookkeeping and accounting needs of IS including Accounts Payables, Accounts Receivables, Cash Receipts, Grants management and payroll.Accounting Cycle Management (Monthly): Prepare all month-end journal entries to the general ledger and manage the month-end closing process.• Reviews and records daily banking activity to ensure accurate recognition and allocation of receipts for all entities to include receiving, identifying and depositing checks as needed.• Conducts monthly bank and credit card reconciliation.• Reviews and records vendor invoices and employee reimbursements for accuracy and account coding into the financial systems.• Manages the processing of the 1099 and other tax filings needed.• Develops and maintains documentation in support of business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls as the practice grows.• Provide input and assist in the overall development of the annual financial operations plan.• Prepares account reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts; reconciles with source documents/transactions to ensure accuracy. Resolves any discrepancies that may arise.• Prepares and maintains fixed asset and depreciation schedules.• Reconciles investment portfolio and prepares journal entries to record investment activity for all managed funds to properly report investment funds.• Reconciles all bank accounts and prepares journal entries to record bank fees.• Maintains the chart of accounts. Assists in the design, revision and maintenance of the accounting system and procedures.• Prepares necessary schedules and information in preparation of the annual audits as well as coordinates activities surrounding the annual audits.• Extracts and summarizes financial information to prepare the monthly financial statements as well as variance analyses.• Sets up grants in the accounting system to facilitate tracking and reporting for internal management and external reporting. Assists the Director of Finance in the preparation of grant financial report filings.• Assist program staff with grant proposal budgets and adjustments. Assists the Director of Finance and COO in the preparation of the annual budgets by assembling initial data and reviewing data compiled by others; monitors monthly and quarterly budget summary reports; and prepares and shares reports when there is an appreciable variance from budget estimates.• Works independently on continuing assignments or projects that require the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), practices, and theories of professional accounting.Performs other duties as assigned.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESNoneExperience and Education:• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or related (CPA designation is a plus)• 5 - 7 years of professional experience with accounting principles, regulations, financial reporting, grant and membership accounting (Non-profit experience is a plus)Qualifications:• Proficiency in accounting software (Sage Accounting, Bill.com preferred)• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with emphasis on Excel, Word, and Outlook• Knowledge and experience in payroll, accounts receivable, fixed asset, accounts payable, and general ledger systems• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.• Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.• Excellent oral and written communication skills; business-oriented interpersonal skills.• Respects the confidentiality of privileged information known or entrusted to the Senior Accountant by virtue of position or duties.Work Environment:The work environment is a typical office environment. The noise level is usually quiet. Up to 10% travel may be required.
