The Office of the City Attorney is currently accepting applications for a vacancy. The successful candidate may be considered for one of the following positions based on their experience, education, and qualifications:Assistant City Attorney IAssistant City Attorney IISr. Assistant City AttorneyReporting to the City Attorney, a Sr. Assistant City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney II, or Assistant City Attorney I, provides quality legal services to assigned city departments, boards, committees, and commissions. Key responsibilities include providing legal advice and services to the City Manager's Office and staff, reviewing documents and providing legal opinions and advice, and conducting legal research on municipal issues including ordinances, resolutions, contracts, code enforcement, zoning, legislation, real estate, labor and employment, water, franchises, tax suits, bankruptcies, civil service, open records, and financial matters. The attorney may also prosecute Class C misdemeanors and Code of Ordinance violations in the City's municipal court.The attorney will (1) exhibit the City of Brownsville's vision to foster, inspire, and promote a culture of participatory leadership and (2) present proactive legal counsel to ensure that the City of Brownsville continues to provide community-centered responses through innovative approaches to public health, economic development, communications, and service level adjustments.Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an American Bar Association accredited school of law.Current active membership in good standing of the State Bar of Texas.License to practice law issued by the State Bar of Texas.Responsibilities

Provides legal advice, under direct supervision, to City representatives and Law department attorneys on routine or non-complex issues with low political/financial impact.May assist other attorneys on more complex assignments.Prepares, under direct supervision, legal documents on routine or non-complex matters.Performs legal research with minimal supervision, and performs research on complex legal issues with low or moderate political or financial impact.Provides legal advocacy under general supervision, and acts as a lead or supporting representative of the City in internal or external legal matters with low or moderate political/financial impact.Supervises staff, which includes prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary decisions or recommendations.Maintains as lead attorney a full caseload of litigation involving the City, exercising substantial independence in the management and trial of the cases.Performs other related duties as required.Benefits
