Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $104,900 to $198,900/year. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $104,900 to $128,148/year.Work Location:

Full BenefitsSpecial Instructions:For full consideration, please include a resume and a cover letter as part of your application.Brief Summary of Job Duties:Responsible for the training, maintenance, operation, and research in electron microscopy, focused ion beam, atomic force microscopes, and other advanced techniques. Along with another Research & Development Engineer 4, is responsible for the supervision of the microscopy and microanalysis facility which serves more than 300 users annually and over 40 faculty research groups.Required Qualifications:Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.7-9 years Strong background in research microscopy related to higher education.High level of expertise in two of the following and basic familiarity of the others: Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy.Ability to supervise a busy facility, maintain high-end research equipment, and provide feedback and training to users on microscopy and microanalysis. Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.Advanced interpersonal skills.Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner, assess complex challenges, and recommend effective solutions.Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and influence others.Preferred Qualifications:PhD in related field.Special Conditions of Employment:Satisfactory conviction history background checkUCSB is a Tobacco-Free environmentJob Functions and Percentages of Time:30% Facility Supervision - Along with another Research and Development Engineer 4, supervises the day-to-day operation of the 300+ user Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility for the Materials Department.25% SEM - Assists with users and other facility personnel in the use of scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam equipment.30% TEM - Develop and demonstrate a high level of expertise in transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy technology.10% Atomic Force Microscopes - Assist with users and other facility personnel in the use of atomic force microscopy/ scanning probe microscopy.5% Facility Planning and Research Strategization - Helps faculty members plan for future equipment acquisition and development related to research directions on campus.Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Statement:UC Santa Barbara is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
