The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) oversees all activities related to departmental administration, including financial, personnel, systems, research and facilities management, and assures compliance with University policies and procedures. The CAO is responsible for hiring and retaining a well trained, efficient and customer service-oriented staff, and is responsible for the careful management of both the equipment and space assets of the department. The CAO participates in immediate and long-term planning for the department with the goal of maximizing limited resources. The CAO establishes and maintains timely and appropriate reporting mechanisms for the chairs and faculty regarding fiscal, personnel and other critical management areas. The CAO serves as liaison between other departments, other University offices, and extramural organizations, and serves on department and university advisory committees.Note: this is a hybrid schedule allowing for 3 days a week offsite.The CAO of the Departments of Anatomy and Microbiology & Immunology, and the Hooper Foundation reports directly to two department chairs and indirectly to the School of Medicine Vice Dean of Administration and Finance. The CAO also serves in an advisory capacity to the departments' leadership committees, the faculty, and members of the Department.Department Description

This position supports two departments and an organized research unit.The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching at Parnassus Heights and Mission Bay. Research in the department focuses on areas related to microbiology, infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to postdoctoral fellows and graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degrees. The administrative office of the Department is located at the Parnassus Heights campus. Our faculty and staff are committed to building a diverse community that is welcoming and supportive, one that will nurture education and research.The Department of Anatomy is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching. The Department includes 15 faculty members with primary full-time appointments, 15 faculty with joint appointments, and 50+ postdoctoral fellows and students engaged in research that covers questions in cell biology, developmental biology and the neurosciences. Faculty have laboratories at both the Parnassus Heights campus, where there is a focus of interest in cancer biology, and at the Mission Bay campus, where many of the neurobiology faculty are located. The administrative office of the Department is located at the Parnassus Heights campus. Hooper Research Foundation is an organized research unit within the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. We perform scientific research and training at Parnassus Heights.Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training8+ years directly related experience7+ years of lead/supervisor/manager experienceThorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payrollVery strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolutionThorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programsExcellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goalsExcellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniquesExcellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and to develop and maintain high standards of customer serviceExcellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projectsPreferred Qualifications
