Individuals requiring sponsorship must disclose this fact.Role DescriptionThe Genomic Data Scientist / Bioinformatician will play a key role in supporting the development of bioinformatics software and analysis of genetic and genomic data. This position involves applying bioinformatics and genetic analysis skills to enhance our understanding of cat and dog genomes, contributing to internal research projects and product development. The successful candidate will participate in the implementation and refinement of software solutions and data analysis tools under the guidance of the R&D and Commercial leadership.Responsibilities:Support the development and maintenance of bioinformatics software, particularly for the analysis of cat and dog genomes.Assist in refining algorithms for variant calling, disease susceptibility assessments, and other genomic analyses.Help ensure that software solutions are robust and scalable, utilizing tools such as Python, R, and relevant databases.Collaborate with other R&D team members to integrate bioinformatics tools into commercial products and research initiatives.Maintain proficiency in relevant programming languages and tools necessary for genomic data analysis.Participate in continuous learning to stay updated with the latest advancements in bioinformatics and genomics.Organization RelationshipInternal Interactions: Collaborate directly with members of the Basepaws Data/Bioinformatics and Engineering teams, focusing on commercial collaboration. Collaborate directly with members of the Zoetis VMRD Teams and acts as a counterpart to the VMRD bioinformatics work. Interact with Basepaws Laboratory Personnel and Product Development Teams to support research and product development. Regular communication with R&D team leadership for guidance and project alignment.External Interactions: Engage with researchers and professionals in the field of genetics and bioinformatics for collaboration, research sharing, and staying abreast of industry trends within the VMRD.Required Education and Experience:Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, or a related field required.Proven experience in bioinformatics, particularly in software development and genomic data analysis.Strong programming skills in Python, R, and familiarity with other relevant bioinformatics tools.Experience with cloud computing platforms, particularly AWS, is preferred.Preferred Education, Certifications, and Experience:Specialized Knowledge: Experience with specific computational tools (such as Python, R), database management systems, and cloud services (AWS) is highly preferred.Industry Experience: Prior work in a biotech, pharmaceutical, or veterinary medicine environment, especially with a focus on pet health or genetics, is preferred.Other Requirements:Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for effectively conveying complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.Technical:Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics such as Python and R.Experience with database management systems and the ability to manage large datasets.Understanding of cloud-based computing infrastructure and data storage solutions.Familiarity with statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms used in genetic data analysis.Preferred Technical Skills:Knowledge of software development lifecycle, version control systems (e.g., Git), continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices, and containerization technologies.Company informationAs the world’s leading animal health company, we are driven by a singular purpose: to nurture our world and humankind by advancing care for animals.
