Deputy Corporation Counsel

The City of New Rochelle is seeking an experienced professional to assist the corporation counsel with the handling of civil litigation, labor grievances and negotiations, reviewing and preparing contracts and other legal documents, advising municipal officials and representing the municipality in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies.

The incumbent will conduct substantial legal research, and provide legal advice with respect to the operations and administration of departments, boards and commissions when requested, participate in the drafting of resolutions and ordinances, assist in responses related to the Freedom of Information Law, examine legal data to determine advisability of defending or prosecuting lawsuits, anticipate and guard against legal risks involving the City, oversee clerical staff and assistant and attend City Council and other board/commission meetings.

Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of common law and of state and federal law pertaining to municipal activities; special ability to analyze, appraise and apply legal principles, facts and precedents to legal problems; good command of language; initiative; tact and courtesy; good professional judgement; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Candidates for the Deputy Corporation Counsel position should be a graduate from a law school of recognized standing with at least 2 years of experience as an admitted attorney. Federal Court admission preferred.
