The Vanderbilt Microbiome Innovation Center (VMIC) is seeking a Data Scientist Associate 2 to provide support to the VMIC community. The Data Scientist will work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians in research laboratories at VUMC, researching the role of the gut microbiome in infectious and non-infectious diseases. The Data Scientist will attend project meetings and interact daily on-site with members of the VMIC community on a project-by-project basis. A hybrid work schedule may be considered.The successful candidate will have had either academic or on-the-job training in computational research related to translational or basic research, especially in functional genomics projects and microbiome research. They must have demonstrable productivity in bioinformatics and at least five years of experience (inclusive of focused academic research training) in bioinformatics projects utilizing Python programming and/or statistical analysis of large high-throughput data, such as with R and Bioconductor. In addition to general bioinformatics experience, we require evidence of significant contributions to projects in one or more of the following areas: 16S rRNA sequencing, metagenomics, transcriptional analyses, single-cell omics profiling, or RNAseq data analysis. Other application skills in bioinformatics, such as methods development and applications such as machine learning or data integration efforts, will be a plus. High-throughput metabolomics analysis experience is desirable but not required.The successful candidate should be able to work in cross-site teams on deadlines and have strong communication and listening skills. The candidate must be able to manage multiple projects and be prepared to work both independently and in collaborative efforts to complete projects within expected timelines. The candidate should be ready to commit to full data and research reproducibility.Key Responsibilities

Participates in multidisciplinary teams to design, develop, and recommend new approaches for data-driven decision-making.Leads discovery processes on pioneering Artificial Intelligence (“AI”)/Machine Learning (“ML”) based approaches to solve complex data problems across a variety of domains.Provides strategic direction regarding data science and AI in a specific area (e.g., cancer, surgery, planning services, marketing, healthcare delivery).Guides and educates data science teams to provide unbiased and accurate information, analysis, consultation, and recommendations to support strategic and operational data science initiatives.Develops analytics tools that can be used by other staff with non-technical expertise.In some positions, may work with enterprise executive leadership to advance digital strategy.Makes strategic recommendations on data collection, integration and retention requirements, incorporating business requirements and knowledge of best practices.Supports scientific projects under the supervision of a designated senior level data scientist or self-direction.Designs, develops, applies, and modifies scripts or software applications to support data management, extraction, and analysis.Provides consultative services and is responsible to gather, analyze, present findings to leadership.Position Qualifications
