The PositionThe Portland City Attorney’s Office seeks an attorney with a minimum of four years of litigation experience to defend the City in tort matters in state and federal courts. The Attorney will be responsible for all phases of litigation, including drafting pleadings, motions and briefs, conducting all aspects of discovery, court appearances, settlement negotiations, and trial work.The position requires excellent written and oral-advocacy communication skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to manage a challenging caseload, and the flexibility to work both independently and as a team member. State and/or Federal Court civil litigation experience preferred. Prior public entity experience, including police liability, wrongful death, and constitutional claims litigation a plus.The Ideal Candidates Will Have The Following Attributes:Minimum 4 years of litigation experience as a licensed attorneyState and/or Federal Court litigation experienceExcellent communication skillsExcellent writing abilityProficiency in time and case managementExamples Of Job Responsibilities Include:Conduct litigation on behalf of and against the CityProvide legal representation to the City’s elected officials, employees, Bureaus/Offices, boards, and commissionsAppear in court and before judicial, quasi-judicial, administrative, legislative, committee, and public media forumsPrepare for, attend, and advocate for City in legal proceedings and settlement conferences and mediationsPerform post-trial proceduresDetermine grounds for and advise on appealsAdvise City representatives of outcomes and impactsApply, analyze, and interpret federal, state and municipal statutes, regulations, and ordinances, and rules of evidence and explain them to non-attorneysCommunicate both verbally and in writingPresent information, proposals, and recommendations clearly and persuasively in public settingsEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of workDemonstrate tact, diplomacy, and patienceGain cooperation through discussion and collaborationCity of Portland Core Values:
