We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Computer Systems Manager within the General Atomics Energy Group, primarily supporting the DOE Fusion Network. This position is responsible for managing and coordinating the computer systems and networks infrastructure to ensure state-of-the-art, reliable, and efficient performance in support of fusion energy research activities. In addition to direct coordination of a computer service team, management responsibilities will include the preparation of multi-year plans, budgets, schedules, and progress reports. The work location is in San Diego, at one of General Atomics’ several company campuses. This position will also support the development of computer-based solutions for new business, and require a significant level of individual contribution to the system administration of

Linux systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides leadership for the design, implementation, and managing of the Fusion computer systems infrastructure including planning and managing technical performance to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained.

Manages and participates in all phases of assigned computer information system projects from inception through completion, including operation and maintenance.

Leads and coordinates a team of information technology specialists to achieve research goals in support of magnetic and inertial fusion as well as other applicable scientific domains.

Develops and implements current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, and quality objectives for various customers.

Establishes design concepts, criteria, priorities, and computer systems support procedures for product research, development, testing, integration, operation, and maintenance, including computer system design reviews.

Interacts with management and customer representatives concerning projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements and contractual clarification.

Provides major contributions to the preparation of proposals, business plans, work statements and specifications, and operating budgets.

Contributes to user support via e-mail, phone, and instant messaging.

Ensures leadership and excellence is maintained by directing and participating in the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required management, professional, and technical talent.

Participates in the development of new business and expansion of existing business opportunities.

Interacts with customers on long term computer infrastructure development paths in both national and international venues.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in computer science, information technology or a related field as well as eleven or more years of progressive information technology experience in a corporate environment with at least five of those years having management responsibilities. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

Extensive experience in the application of information technology principles (e.g., virtualization, networking, system administration of both

Linux and Windows systems

, advanced computing environments such as HPC, cyber security, file systems, data backup), concepts, theory, and practice as well as comprehensive project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.

Must possess the ability to resolve management and technical problems. Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.

Highly capable to work and interact with scientists, engineers and managers from different institutions, nationally and internationally.

Customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in a scientific research environment, familiarity with US government and international computer systems, and ability to rapidly switch focus among projects and determine corresponding priorities dynamically.
