Position Summary

The Senior Tax Consultant assists team members in performing Canada Sales Tax (GST/HST/QST/PST) overpayment reviews, audit reviews, and filing refund claims for all clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares for reviews including researching and developing a review plan
  • Work with clients' data to verify control totals, reconcile tax reported, and analyze audit populations and samples
  • Obtains source documentation from clients' system
  • Reviews client documents relating to GST/HST/QST/PST including invoices, purchase orders, GST/HST/QST/PST tax returns and details, GST/HST/QST/PST audits, etc.
  • Creates schedules of invoices and/or other documents
  • Researches and enters data regarding tax exemptions into the system
  • Researches GST/HST/QST/PST tax questions and issues
  • Prepares GST/HST/QST/PST refund requests to be submitted to provinces and/or claimed on a tax return
  • Negotiates with Federal/Provincial auditors during refund processing, audit appeals, etc.
  • Prepares updates and reports of findings for clients
  • Prepares required administrative information for Managing Director and/or Director Practice Lead, including WIP maintenance, entering job cost hours, backlog days, forecasting, etc.
  • Identify and collect data on prospective clients
  • Analyze potential opportunities


Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field required
  • CPA (CGA, CMA, CA) designation preferred
  • 3-5 years' professional experience preferably in accounting or tax
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Past experience with Canadian Indirect Tax (GST/HST/QST/PST) preferably
  • Courses in industry tax desired
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills; intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Travel as required (between 10-20%, approximately)
