Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training, and education.The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Auditor, Audit and Reporting for the Accounting Department. In this position you will manage and coordinate all financial statement audits for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and its affiliates, including Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) and all international offices. This includes drafting the audited financial statements for the HSUS and HSLF, reviewing the statements for the international entities and coordinating, preparing and collecting all financial statement support documents requested by external auditors.You will be responsible for:Communicating audit timing, requesting lists, and due dates to the Accounting team; ensuring that all schedules are prepared timely and accurately; reviewing all audit schedules to ensure that they are accurate and that where necessary, they tie to the financial statements; providing follow-up communication as needed to ensure that the audits remain on schedule;Keeping current on the monthly activity of the HSUS and its affiliates by reviewing monthly financial statement packages and participating in review sessions. Maintaining monthly activity of the HSLF Federal and State PACs. Serving as the internal liaison with other departments regarding audit status/information requested. Reviewing internal control procedures and ensuring that any audit comments/management letter comments resulting from the prior year audit are reviewed and incorporated into control procedures where appropriate;Drafting audited financial statements based on U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Reviewing the draft with the Director of Financial Reporting, Controller and CFO to ensure the completeness and accuracy before providing to the audit team. Reviewing any materials provided for the international audits including the financial statement packages to ensure that they are consistent with prior year, accurate and complete. Assisting the International Accounting Team with any areas of the international audits as needed;Serving as the primary liaison with external audit firms which includes coordinating the audit timing, management of the audit team while on site, and ensuring that all audit schedules are prepared timely, reviewed, and provided to all participants. Responding timely to all inquiries from audit teams directly or coordinates the audit team with the appropriate internal team;Keeping current with best practices in accounting standards for non-profit organizations. Drafting memos/white papers of applicable accounting standards updates for external auditors;Ensuring that the Accounting management team is updated on the progress of the audits and provides updates on any significant issues that may arise during the audit process;Performing other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.Qualifications and Requirements:Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration or equivalent work experience required;A minimum of five (5) years of experience in financial reporting required;Public accounting experience preferred. Certified Public Accountant preferred;Nonprofit experience a plus;Exposure to international accounting standards/international tax and audit requirements preferred;Experience drafting audited financial statements (including footnotes) preferred;Knowledge of accounting software and/or reporting software in order to pull data for financial reporting (trial balance, general ledger account detail, etc.);Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook);Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;Excellent written and verbal communication skills;Ability to handle and maintain confidential and sensitive information;Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.Please submit your resume and cover letter as one document.This position is in the DC metro area - Remote Eligible.Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability, marital or parental status or protected veteran status.
