UNC Health Appalachian (UNCHA), the leading healthcare system in the High Country of North Carolina, is seeking their next President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Comprised of three hospitals, 15 medical practices, a cancer center, a heart and vascular center, a rehabilitation center, and a healthcare foundation, UNCHA is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, an idyllic place to live, work, and play. In 2022, the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, Inc. (ARHS) Board of Trustees and the UNC Health Board of Directors approved a comprehensive, long-term Management Services Agreement (MSA) between the two organizations. The goal of the affiliation is to expand local healthcare services and improve access to resources for patients in the High Country region of the state. UNCHA remains a locally owned health care authority with local governance and decision making through the Board of Trustees who live and work in the community. Under the guidance of their next President and CEO, UNC Health Appalachian will advance its vision to build a regional healthcare system that results in healthier individuals and enhanced quality of life.

Summary:

The President and CEO role leads and directs all aspects of UNC Health Appalachian. Assures operational success to achieve stated goals and objectives, including top performance in clinical quality, patient safety, patient engagement and satisfaction, provider engagement and alignment, workforce engagement and satisfaction, and financial performance. Participates in the Health Care System senior leadership team to represent UNC Health Appalachian in decision-making, setting priorities, and managing assets within the Hospital. Reports to UNC Health Chief Administrative Officer and President, Network Hospitals, in addition to entity Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities:

Financial Leadership and Oversight:Assures the Hospital’s long-term success and position within the local community and region through the establishment and communication of a clear vision for the organization, executive leadership, setting operational policies and procedures, and maintaining appropriate accountabilities and expectations of the executive team to ensure organizational and individual performance standards are met.

Provides leadership and direction on matters of policy development, strategic direction, financial, operational, and facility plans; shapes planning and goal-setting for assigned UNC Health hospital in a way that sets a clear expectation for continuous improvement and excellent performance in financial metrics, service delivery, patient care and outcomes, and market position.

Inspires confidence by performing and communicating professionally, creating a team-oriented culture with senior management, providing guidance, direction, and instruction, and promoting empowerment so that programs and services are designed and delivered consistent with established policies and in accord with UNC HCS Board approval.

Represents the organization with the highest degree of professionalism, maintaining a strong and productive relationship with the local, regional, and state health care and business community, the public, and elected officials. Interacts professionally with the UNC Health system members, the entity’s Board of Trustees, medical staff, employees, and management team, and carries out responsibilities according to the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Reviews operating results of the organization, compares them to established objectives and takes steps to ensure that excellent results are achieved. Sets objectives to assure continued success and financial viability, as well as top performance in quality of care, patient safety and outcomes, patient engagement, provider engagement and alignment, and employee engagement and satisfaction.

Leads local integration efforts with UNC Health at both the system and regional level, in partnership with healthcare system leaders and other regional UNC Health affiliate leaders, including but not limited to clinical integration, shared services/back-office integration, and regional collaborations when appropriate.

Takes the lead in assessing partnerships with physician groups and/or other healthcare entities that further the mission, vision, and success of assigned UNC Health hospital.

Effectively utilizes UNC Health resources to leverage local initiatives, ensures efficient use of resources, and balances capacity, cost, and quality with patient and community needs.

Education Requirements:

Requires Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

No licensure or certification required.

Professional Experience Requirements:

Requires a minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in healthcare operations, with at least ten (10) years of people management experience.
