Overview:

Noor Family Services (“NFS”) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that works to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in immigrant and refugee communities. By delivering high quality legal services, case-management, referrals, counseling, and education, NFS fulfills its mission to assist survivors of domestic violence to reach independence and to promote culture change by shifting norms that are used to perpetuate domestic violence.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Legal Advocate’s primary responsibility is to help clients move smoothly through the legal system, and to provide information, court monitoring and moral support for abuse victims during the judicial proceedings. In addition, the Legal Advocate will inform and provide resources to law enforcement and the courts on the issues of domestic violence and strategies to ensure victims’ safety during a crisis.

The advocate assists the victims with exploring all options that are available to them, including Family Violence and Stalking Protection Orders. The advocate assists the victim in completing necessary forms, walks the victim through the process from going before the judge to filing the petition with the clerk's office. The legal advocate attends court proceedings with clients.

Qualifications and Recommended Knowledge:

This position is part time and requires knowledge and experience working with domestic violence victims. The Legal Advocate must be able to multitask, be organized, and possess good communication and computer skills, with experience working in a stressful and fast paced environment with diverse individuals. Skills require a patient, calm and empathetic attitude, with the ability to listen well and be gently assertive when necessary.

Experience in the field of family violence.

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in social work or related field.

Punctual, organized, and reliable.

Professional and courteous.

Be able to physically lift 25 pounds.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications.

Bilingual in Arabic and/or Spanish a plus.

Responsibilities:

Provide immediate crisis intervention and safety planning via telephone for Family Violence/Stalking/Dating Violence victims.

Perform the intake process and assess potential clients’ legal needs following NFS legal assistance guidelines and assign cases to attorneys accordingly.

Coordinate with attorneys any assistance needed for representing clients for TPO hearings and accompany clients to TPO hearing if needed.

Assist attorneys and clients in gathering evidence for TPO proceedings.

Assist clients in completing TPO Petition if needed or refer clients to the appropriate legal advocacy office in the counties served by NFS.

Assist clients in completing the Domestic-Relations-Financial-Affidavit (DRFA).

Track progress of legal case from initiation to completion and close files when deemed appropriate by legal staff.

Make referrals on behalf of clients to partner agencies for services.

Request exit survey from clients and upload it to the database.

Share Client Handbook with clients and answer questions.

Represent agency at conferences and community domestic violence task force meetings, including outreach opportunities.

Share responsibilities for keeping the office orderly and clean.

Work supportively and cooperatively with staff.

Perform any additional duties that may be deemed reasonable and necessary by the Executive Director or administrative office.

Compensation and Benefits:

The agency offers a competitive hourly wage (range $22- $24) based on experience and expertise. Benefits include generous paid time off, mileage reimbursement, health insurance stipend, and a retirement matching contribution.
