The practice of perfusion is defined as those functions necessary for the support, treatment measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. A perfusionist is the skilled person, qualified by academic and clinical education, who operates extra-corporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient's cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic function by monitoring the necessary variables.Create or modify existing techniques to accommodate complex cardiac procedures such as LVAD, DHCA, bridge to transplantCounterpulsationHIPEC proceduresCirculatory support ventricular assistanceBlood conservation techniques/autotransfusionMyocardial preservationAnticoagulation and hematologic monitoring and analysisBlood gas and blood chemistry monitoring and analysisInduction of hypothermia/hyperthermia with reversalHemodilutionHemofiltrationAdministration of medications, blood components and anesthetic agents via the extra-corporeal circuitIsolated Limb/Organ perfusionElectrophysiologic analysisAccess for dialysis during CPBDocumentation associated with described dutiesEngage in regular decision making process to meet the needs of individual patients.
