System Integration Architect

in our

IT Enterprise Architecture

department. This is a remote, work from home opportunity and you may be based outside of the greater Chicagoland area.

The System Integration Architect is a key team member of the UChicago Medicine Enterprise Architecture team who is responsible for the planning, coordinating, designing, and leading API/service development and defining integration pattern. The primary focus of the integration architect is to ensure seamless data exchange between electronic health record (EHR) system and other ancillary healthcare applications. The position is also responsible for effectively managing the IT architectural planning process, establishing development methodologies and standards, achieving performance targets, and implementing continuous improvement goals. Scope of responsibilities of someone at this level includes leading solution architecture design, and implementation activities of a large area of functional processing (e.g. Lab systems) or leading a major processing architecture (e.g. online transaction processing) within a shared architecture capability. Assists in the design, administration, analysis, evaluation, troubleshooting, and documenting of complex existing technology solutions. Assists with more complex testing and analysis of all elements of the systems’ capabilities. Helps make decisions and determine policy to maximize system availability. Understands the business impact of events and decisions made relating to system changes/enhancements.

Essential Job Functions

Participate in IT Discovery process to perform initial technical assessment of each project, define high-level design, and provide an implementation roadmap

Partner with UCM IT leadership to ensure adherence with IT governance, standard processes, and architecture standards

Creating conceptual architecture diagrams for all new initiatives that require IT support

Working with the vendors and project managers to understand the technology needs for vended product/service

Identifying technology solution(s) that fit our Enterprise Architecture principles, standards, and technology landscape while meeting project needs

Working with the Enterprise Architect creates tactical solutions and lays the roadmap for future architecture to meet needed SLAs and helps maintain enterprise ecosystem map

Work with the project manager to develop and present conceptual architectures to the Architecture Review Board for approval

Support project managers in creating technical work breakdown structures and technical task dependencies

Identifying and documenting potential technology solutions to mitigate risks and/or solve technical issues for projects

Creating and managing implementation architecture diagrams such as object modeling, sequence diagram, and data flows

Prepare roadmaps and phased approaches to accomplish a long-term plan

Participate and provide direction in the project planning activities for the project or activity

Provides communication and documentation of architectural impacts and risks to the appropriate parties

Drive project architecture details with the rest of the architecture community via domain architecture reviews and architecture assurance boards

Lead technical consulting and troubleshooting throughout project life cycle

Support & lead other architects by participating/coordinating in domain architecture reviews and architecture assurance boards

Drive project related research and development

Coaches and mentors others on general architectural patterns, standards, guidelines, and issues

Ensure that teams are conducting design, code inspections, and peer reviews

Identify and document architectural impacts to existing systems

Provides architectural direction & support for Operational Readiness activities

Engages support areas as needed (e.g. Infrastructure, DBA, Network, HL7 Messaging, etc.)

Maintains architectural documentation between SDLC phases and as appropriate

Required Qualifications

B.S or M.S in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience

Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills

Ability to present ideas in a business-friendly and user-friendly manner

Experience in using MS Visio, MS Project, and MS Excel

Minimum 8+ years of experience in IT

5+ years in an architectural role

5+ years deploying integration solutions

At least 2 years’ experience in Healthcare IT

Detailed understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts

Independent problem-solver. Sorts through issues and conducts comparative analysis of multiple solutions (i.e. skilled in problem analysis; pays very close attention to detail)

Able to work in a team environment or independently

Excellent listening and organizational skills with emphasis on detail and follow-through

Able to organize and delegate tasks, coordinate projects and be willing to advise others

Skilled in project management and work plan development and implementation

Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

High skill with capacity planning and analysis

High level of understanding of long-range strategies, High Availability, and business continuity

Familiarity with disaster recovery strategies

Advanced knowledge in system analysis and design

Programming in one or more languages

Knowledge of RDBMS such as SQL server and Oracle

Conceptual and functional knowledge of HTTP, Web Services, Network & Firewall

General understanding of device integration and HL7 data format

Familiarity with Epic, Integration engines, and medical clinical engineering devices

Experience with Healthcare IT environment
