Position Overview

This includes work related to the review and inspection of design and construction of residential and commercial development, roads, and stormwater systems for compliance with applicable plans and governing codes, ordinances, policies, and other requirements. Work involves inspection of roads and highways and residential and commercial developments throughout the course of construction to determine whether workmanship and materials conform to existing requirements. Work also includes review of development plans, drainage complaints, erosion control measures, asphalt condition assessments, bridges and other items related to public infrastructure improvements. Employees in this class work independently on field inspections and must make decisions requiring independent judgment.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects multiple and various construction sites for compliance to approved plans and applicable codes, ordinances, policies, and other requirements.Confers with contractors in making corrections to ensure conformance with approved plans and applicable codes, ordinances, policies, and other requirements.Reviews plans for the same.Evaluate drainage issues, consider options for improvements, and offer recommendations for consideration by the engineering team and/or the district offices.High level of interaction with County residents, contractors, engineering firm representatives, and other County employees.Perform asphalt evaluation on existing county roads and document evaluations in electronic form using established criteria.Inspect road construction or repair.Performs related work as required.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Education

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a standard high school, including courses in mathematics, science, and mechanical drawing.Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and specifications.Some knowledge of construction, development, and other related principles and practices.Ability to perform simple mathematical computations.Skill in the operation of a variety of standard office equipment.Experience

Experience in completing field inspection and related tasks required.Physical Requirements

Must be physically capable of performing manual labor in adverse weather conditions.Must be able to see well enough to operate motor vehicles, surveying equipment, and various computer/digital screens.Must be able to hear well enough to communicate effectively to other workers and supervisors.Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs.

Certifications or Licenses Required

Qualified Credentialed Inspector within 6 months from date of employment.Must have a valid Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the Madison County auto insurance provider.

Dental Coverage : Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com. Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance:

Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans : Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is a Defined Benefit Plan administered through the

Retirement Systems of Alabama

(RSA). Participants contribute 5% to 8.5% of their earnings depending on their hire date and classification. Sworn Certified Personnel have an accelerated contribution schedule

Employee Clinic:

Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County's health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
