Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven (LVAGNH) is seeking a dynamic, passionate Executive Director with exceptional leadership skills, fundraising experience, and a growth mindset. The candidate will advance this non-profit as it moves into the next 50 years of transformative community service with strategic marketing and development decisions, staff advancement, and use of technology and investments to improve operational efficiency and measurable outcomes.

LVAGNH serves over 500 students in Meriden/Wallingford, New Haven, and Naugatuck Valley with the dedication of 125 volunteer tutors, 3 skilled staff sites and expert program managers. Volunteers provide free tutoring to adult learners from diverse backgrounds representing over 60 countries, in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Basic Literacy (BL).

The ED reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the organization’s achievement of its mission and financial objectives.

Salary range: $70-75k

Key Responsibilities:

Program/Administrative –

Management

Strategic and Tactical

Execute the plans and policies authorized by the Board, including participation with the Board in fulfillment of the organization’s Strategic Plan.

Serve as the lead in all development efforts to ensure the financial security of the organization.

Operational

Administration of operational functions including risk management, insurance, and accounting.

Complete state grant requirements including annual, quarterly, and other recurring documentation.

Maintains official records and legal documents. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and Board policies.

Oversee payroll, deposits, and expense payments with bookkeeper.

Fulfill organizations and grantees’ data management, accountability, and auditing requirements.

Board Involvement

Serve on the LVAGNH Board, attend committee meetings, and provide staff support to committees.

Provide accurate and timely information to the Board regarding issues needing the Board’s attention.

Oversee preparation of timely reports to grant-funders, the Board of Directors, and donors.

Inform Board and staff of appropriate activities, requests, and opportunities.

Promote Financial Health -

Development

Implement an effective fundraising plan, including cultivation of new and stewarding of existing donors. Identify new opportunities for revenue and sustainability from a diverse portfolio of donors including individuals, foundations, corporations, and government grant opportunities.

Participate in the execution of fundraising and development activities, including fundraising efforts/events, sponsorships, the annual appeal, and online giving campaigns.

Supervise contractor conducting grant writing or other development activities.

Represent the agency at hearings, reviews, and site visits with funders.

Develop the annual budget and provides accountability for budget and program operation revenue and expenses; provides input to treasurer, finance committee and Board monthly or as required.

Foster relationships and maintain interactions with donors and other constituents, including ongoing promotional communication plan.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends in literacy and philanthropy.

Volunteer Outreach and Community Awareness -

Marketing

Increase the organization’s visibility and image through effective public relations and communication strategies throughout Greater New Haven, Meriden/Wallingford, and the Valley, including oversight of effective use of social media.

Serve as the organization’s chief spokesperson. Represent the agency to the media and the public. Promote literacy awareness and program outcomes in the communities we serve.

Cultivate networking and collaborative opportunities with other agencies/organizations.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with community partners.

Serve as LVAGNH’s primary representative to the CT State Department of Education, and municipal Boards of Education.

Coordinate the development and distribution of promotional materials and publicity.

Direct all aspects of communication pieces and collateral materials.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Minimum five years of experience in a non-profit leadership or management role. Familiarity with adult education programs, literacy volunteer programs, and/or similar non-profit programs a plus. Cultural sensitivity is necessary.

Minimum bachelor’s degree, preferably in education or non-profit management; master’s degree preferred.

Proven record in fundraising, development, grant writing, and donor cultivation, including use of Salesforce or similar donor management database.

Experience in fiscal management, budget preparation and financial reporting.

Excellent communication skills (written, oral, public speaking) and ability to work well with internal and external stakeholders.

Integrity in dealing with all constituents: staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, donors, vendors, and peer organizations.

Strong organizational skills including ability to meet deadlines, quickly establish priorities, thoroughness, timeliness, and attention to detail.

Experience with social media as a communications, public relations, and fundraising tool.

Competencies with Instructional Technology and applications including Zoom and Microsoft Office.

Ability to track and analyze performance, results and communicate impact.

Flexibility to travel within the agency area and work some evenings and weekends.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
