The Aquatic Section, Invasive Species Program, Aquatic Nuisance Species work unit exists to comply with, and coordinate implementation of, the Colorado Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) Act (SB 08-226). This position will implement invasive species early detection & rapid response methods for CPW. The primary function will be to manage ANS sampling & monitoring crews and the aquatic nuisance species laboratory, including hiring and supervision of temporary employees, and coordination with partner agencies as well as area and regional staff.

Specific job duties include but are not limited to:

Manage Early Detection ANS Sampling & Monitoring Field Crews

This position will directly manage aquatic nuisance species early detection sampling & monitoring field crews. Supporting Field Crews requires regular overnight travel, camping, early morning and late evening shifts.

Manage Aquatic Nuisance Species Laboratory

This position will provide direct oversight of CPW’s Aquatic Nuisance Species Laboratory, which processes all samples collected by the field crew and partner agencies.

Provide Training and Quality Assurance for Staff and Participate in Procedure/Curriculum Development.

This position will be certified as a statewide trainer for watercraft inspection and decontamination, and will provide certification training throughout Colorado for WID stations operated by CPW and their partners.

Participate in Working Groups Including Site Specific Planning Teams

Sampling for aquatic nuisance species is multi-jurisdictional which requires participation in many collaborative working groups.

Assist the Invasive Species Program Manager with ANS Rapid Response

Identification of novel ANS in a water body demands expeditious efforts to determine the extent of a population and implement any potential control measures.Provide Education and Information Outreach to Professionals and the Public.Other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsSix (6) years of relevant experience in invasive species, specifically aquatic nuisance species, ecology, aquatic biology, botany, conservation, natural resource management, volunteer management, or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.ORA combination of related education in invasive species, specifically aquatic nuisance species, ecology, aquatic biology, botany, conservation, natural resource management, volunteer management and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to six (6) years.

Substitutions

Appropriate education in a related field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.Preferred Qualifications

Current or former State experience relevant to this positionCurrent or former Colorado Parks and Wildlife experiencePublic speaking & presentation development and facilitation skillsHuman Resource Management including managing remote employeesExperience performing biological surveys/monitoringExperienced working in a laboratory settingExperience with the use of GIS Software (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS) for mapping and spatial data analysis.Required Competencies

Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skillsSelf – motivated, ability to work well independently as well as in/with a teamStrong written skills with an understanding of legal and regulatory concepts and language.Must have, or be willing to obtain, certification as a statewide trainer for watercraft inspection and decontamination.Conditions of Employment
