And that starts with our employees.Job DescriptionGeneral SummaryThe Surgical Technologist II is a proficient Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Surgical Technologist (ST) who practices under the supervision of a registered nurse as a member of the surgical team in the Operating Room to deliver patient care throughout the perioperative experience. The Surgical Technologist II demonstrates excellent critical thinking skills and a high level of problem solving abilities.Principal Duties And Essential FunctionsDemonstrates the ability to act as an independent scrub assistant during all stages of the surgical procedure.Maintains strict aseptic technique during set-up, patient draping and during surgical procedure.Follows Operating Room procedures for the proper decontamination of instrumentation, equipment, and room turnover.Demonstrates advanced knowledge and expert practice while assisting with all procedure types within their surgical specialty area.Displays proficient knowledge and skills related to procedures performed outside of their surgical specialty area, and demonstrates the ability to competently support multiple service lines and case types within the Operating Room.Performs the role of Preceptor for staff in training.Remains knowledgeable about equipment ensuring safe and efficient utilization across multiple surgical specialties.Appropriately selects instruments, special supplies and equipment to anticipate the need of the surgical team.Performs all counts with the circulating nurse according to Operating Room policy.Manages all intraoperative medications in accordance with Operating Room policy.Assists as needed in emergency situations.Manages surgical specimens according to Physician's orders and Hospital policy.Maintains a collaborative work relationship with peers and colleagues in order to create a positive work environment.Assists in the positioning, moving and transporting of patients as needed.Reports equipment and supply problems to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead or Clinical Nursing Director as needed.Completes all required continuing education to maintain certification, if applicable.QualificationsJob Knowledge And SkillsAdvanced knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention practices.Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology to ensure that optimal patient care is provided.Basic knowledge of computers, surgical equipment and infrastructure.Basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span.Education And CertificationMust be a graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or training through a branch of the United States Armed Forces.Must be certified within 1 year of completing the surgical technologist training program.Current BLS.Experience:A minimum of 2-3 years of prior experience as a Surgical Technologist is required.Working Conditions/Physical DemandsAbility to work within the semi-restricted and restricted environment of the Operating Room and other Perioperative support areas.Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, extreme noise levels, radiation, lasers, drastic fluctuations in ambient temperature, etc.Ability to remain in a standing position for long periods of time.Ability to wear a protective lead apron for extended periods of time.Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, equipment, power tools, instruments, etc.
