TITLE: Principal Scientist, Tumor Biology & Biomarker Research

REPORTS TO: SVP, Biology

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

LOCATIONS: South San Francisco, CA - HQ

SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly motivated Principal Scientist, Tumor Biology and Biomarker Research to grow the oncology portfolio and provide strategic disease biology direction. The ideal candidate must be an independently driven, passionate, innovative, excellent team player, and committed to drug discovery. The role will involve developing and implementing tumor biology and biomarker development strategies to halt pathogenic protein formation, exploring the disease MOAs, and supporting scientific intelligence to drive oncology programs forward with scientific excellence and urgency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Lead, develop, and provide scientific leadership and disease biology direction with a focus on tumor biology and develop biomarkers to support small molecular drug discovery and clinical research, through the creation and execution of high-quality integrated translational plans to support oncology programs at preclinical and clinical stages.Support the SVP, Biology to develop, refine, and implement the research strategies in oncology R&D with a focus on linking target biology to human disease.Work with group leads to drive for results and ensure delivery in a timely manner.Work with the project leaders and executive leadership team to provide the best support in tumor biology and biomarker research and ensure the timely achievement of project goals.Foster a science-driven, goal-oriented culture that values innovation, teamwork, agility, transparency, accountability, and empowerment.Engage, and ensure the success of collaborations across internal and external scientific research.Stay current on the latest scientific advancements and oncology drug discovery and development to support R&D pipelines.Collaborate with function leaders to provide inputs on the effectiveness and development of scientific planning and operations.Conduct scientific presentations to senior management, project teams, and internal collaborators.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:Proven strong track record and expertise with extensive experience in tumor biology and biomarker research, and small molecular drug discovery.A strong sense of urgency and scientific focus with effective communication skills to drive results and delivery are extremely important.Demonstrated extensive experience in target validation, mechanism of action, lead optimization, and translational biomarker discovery to support IND-enabling studies.Excellent interpersonal skills, high ethical standards, and outstanding written and verbal skills to communicate effectively with executive leadership.A strategic thinker with excellent leadership skills, and prior project leader roles with deep expertise in oncology discovery, signaling pathways, and assay development is highly preferred.Strong leadership with influencing and collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented environment to build strong teamwork with cross-function leaders to enable high performance.Strong track record of scientific productivity as evidenced by high-quality, impactful publications. Strong research expertise in small molecular drug discovery and ribosomal biology is a plus.Excellent project management and organization skills to multi-task, prioritize options, anticipate challenges, and execute goals as a member of an interdisciplinary team are essential.Makes effective and persuasive presentations on sensitive or complex topics to senior management, external customers, collaborators, and public groups.Thrives in a collaborative team setting and is driven by a strong commitment to oncology research in a fast-paced start-up environment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:A Ph.D. in tumor biology or related fields with a minimum of 15 years of relevant industry experience in cancer drug discovery and development.Equivalent combination of education and experience.Effective people management experience.

JOB COMPLEXITY:Works on extremely complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangible variables. Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.

SALARY RANGE:The salary range for this position is

$180,000 to $220,000

per annum. Compensation will be determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, skill set, years of experience and education.
