Position Overview

The Kansas Small Business Development Center at the University of Kansas (Kansas SBDC at KU) provides management/technical assistance, resource referrals/business information, and training to small business owners, potential business owners, and managers to enhance the success of small business ventures through innovation, expansion, and increased productivity. The SBDC Program Consultant reports to the Regional Director of Kansas SBDC.This position is located off campus at the Kansas SBDC, at 718 New Hampshire Street, Lawrence, KS. Position is contingent on funding. This is a 1.0 FTE, regular, full-time, 12-month professional staff position.Job Description

50% Direct Client Counseling:

Provide direct one-to-one counseling with small business clients in areas including business planning, finance, marketing, and management. Duties include but are not limited to:Assist clients with business plan development, financial projections, cash flow analysis, marketing plan development, and other areas of business development.Assist with client intake process including explaining services to and collecting data from clients.Maintain client relationships in accordance with Kansas SBDC policy.Conduct follow-up activities to improve service delivery and assessment.Participate in professional development activities to continue to develop counseling skills.Establish annual professional development plan under the guidance of the Regional Director and meet the goals of the plan.20% Administrative Support:

Provide a broad range of administrative support for center and directors. Duties include but are not limited to:Maintain Kansas SBDC at KU client files and audit for accurate information.Enter and update client information in the Kansas SBDC database after each session.Compile Kansas SBDC at KU client information for monthly and quarterly reports.Assist the SBDC director in coordinating and marketing the SBDC program and services, curriculum, and event planning.Conduct market research in multiple databases for each new client, synthesize information, and send market research to clients.Answer the telephone and greet/assist in-person visitors to the center.Participate in general office duties: copy resource material, file paperwork, sort incoming and outgoing mail, and data entry.Assist the Kansas SBDC at KU Director and other Kansas SBDC staff as directed in achieving the goals of the center.Perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Director.30% Community Outreach:

Promote awareness of the services provided by the Kansas SBDC at KU, the Kansas SBDC, and the KU School of Business. Duties include but are not limited to:Deliver presentations to area organizations.Attend functions and networking events.Involvement with professional organizations.Assist with conducting startup seminars/workshops with small business clients.Develop and produce marketing materials for training seminars.Execute all organizational details, including registration, and follow-up for planned seminars.Required Qualifications

Master's degree or Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of related experience.A minimum of 1-year of experience working with small businesses or operating a small business, this can be concurrent with related experience.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by application materials.Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technology, including word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, scheduling, and data processing applications.Preferred Qualifications

Degree in business or closely related field.Two (2) years or more experience working with small businesses or operating a small business.Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations and in a team environment.A valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.Additional Candidate Instructions
