Responsibilities: Description of Position: The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the direct and indirect provision of professional nursing care for the patients in the Med Surg department. The RN is accountable for ongoing evaluation and documentation of all components of care delivered to patients, including coordination and direct supervision of the patient care team. Administer professional nursing services within the RN scope of practice and in accordance with GCMH policies and procedures. Provide nursing support to the Emergency Department as needed. Ensure that safety and sanitation standards are maintained in all work areas. Complete assignments as given by the charge nurse or team leader as applicable. Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician/provider in accordance with GCMH policies and procedures. Obtain ordered medication, supplies and equipment. Participate in orientation of new staff. Ensure that supporting personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable standards, in accordance with the plan of care and patient wishes. Report any concerns to the Inpatient Team Leader or Director of Clinical Services. Ensure that hospital personnel, patients and visitors follow the hospital/departments established policies and procedures at all times. Complete all necessary documentation as required and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Determine appropriate bed placement for incoming admissions in conjunction with clinical care coordinator and team leader. Display a working knowledge of equipment and trouble-shooting as needed. Adhere to daily and monthly control checks (ie. Glucometer, crash cart, alarms, refrigerator temperature logs, etc). Report and maintain records. Communicate with the attending provider and patient family any change in the patients condition. Round with providers as needed. Complete unit specific daily tasks as assigned (ie. Charge entry, 24-hour administrative report). Obtain and document in the electronic health record all nurse-collect labs such as, but not limited to UA, stool samples, sputum specimens, RSV, Mono, strep, COVID-19. Initiate, review and update the plan of care according to policy. Ensure that nursing care and treatments are consistent with the plan of care. Participate in the department quality improvement projects. Provide proper shift report. Communicate patient care issues to the following shift. Ensure that team members are aware of any changes throughout the shift. Restock patient rooms, alcoves and nurse areas daily. Interpret patient data and implement action plan appropriate to situation using critical thinking. Collaborate with appropriate disciplines to develop coordinated outcomes and interventions, interact with team members regarding patient progress. Follow established universal precautions in the use of personal protective equipment. Verify assessments performed by LPN. Provide services to patients scheduled on the Outpatient Infusion schedule. Basic UPH Performance Criteria Demonstrate the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. Demonstrate ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. Maintain current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. Practice and reflect knowledge of HIPAA, CAH COPs, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. Complete all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Bring any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administration. Take appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance. Qualifications: Minimum Requirements Preferred or Specialized Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Experience: 3-5 years recent experience as an RN working in medical/surgical areas. License(s)/Certification(s): RN current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa. Must possess and maintain current BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and Dependent Adult and Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter certification as outlined per policy. Current professional certification related to area of practice. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.
