The Episcopal Church of St John in the Wilderness is seeking an experienced Director of Music and Organist who can plan, organize, and direct parish music programs to enhance worship and the spiritual experience of our church community. The Director of Music will provide music and musical leadership for two regular Sunday services and other services that are part of the church’s liturgical year, including Easter, Advent, and Christmas. Additionally, the Director of Music and Organist provides music for other occasions as requested, such as weddings and funerals.
Responsibilities include:
Lead music at all liturgies and services on Sunday mornings and other special services as required by the Rector and as described in the church calendar year.
Conduct weekly choir rehearsals and maintain the music library.
Submit necessary text and music to the office staff for publishing in weekly/special bulletins.
Direct outreach events into the community via performances and hosting of outside groups.
Oversee and strengthen the music ministry and recruit and encourage musicians of all ages within and outside the congregation.
Prepare and monitor the music ministry budget and present an annual budget to the Finance Committee.
Qualifications and Skills:
Superb musician with a commitment to excellence in liturgical worship.
Knowledge of traditional sacred music, Episcopal liturgical practice, and the use of music in worship.
Proficiency in both choir conducting (with singers of all ages) and organ playing. Must be skilled in playing the pipe organ.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work well in collaboration with others, both staff and lay.
Strong communication skills and the ability to speak confidently before groups.

Benefits:
Salary Range $35 –$45 K commensurate with experience.
The church will contribute to a 403(b) retirement plan equal to 5% of income; the church also matches up to 4% of employee contributions to the 403(b).
Two weeks’ vacation.
