The Staff Attorney will maintain a status in good standing with the Wisconsin Bar and take an active role in public interest law organizations and advocacy in the community. The LSP Staff Attorney must be willing and able to travel to Greater Wisconsin Vivent Health offices to provide legal services, legal representation, and educational outreach.Regular Duties include:Conducting case intake assessmentsMaintaining case files in an orderly fashionRespecting client confidentialityMaking appropriate client referrals to other programs within Vivent Health and other legal services programs in the communityCollaborating with the Director of LSP and Vivent Health attorneys on casesDrafting legal documentsConducting presentations for clients, staff and community membersActively participating in legal community organizationsProviding guidance to LSP internsCompetently representing clients in HIV discrimination, housing, advance directives, estate planning, Social Security disability appeals, and any other tasks assigned by the Director of LSPEssential FunctionsProvide competent, professional, and ethical legal assistance to clients throughout the state of WisconsinMaintain and organize case files in a timely and orderly fashion, and document all activities appropriatelyConduct regular educational presentations on assigned topics to a variety of audiencesRepresent LSP clients in all legal proceedings in accordance with the protocols and procedures of the relevant legal body, Court, or Administrative Law Judge, the Code of Professional Responsibility, the Wisconsin State Bar, and the American Bar AssociationQualifications1-3 years' experience as a practicing attorneyLaw Degree from an American Bar Association accredited law schoolValid driver’s licenseMember in good standing with the State Bar of WisconsinAdmitted to practice in the Federal Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin, or eligible for admissionA minimum of (2) years of legal experienceWorking knowledge of Wisconsin Law and Courts and the Seventh Federal Circuit Court SystemExperience with a legal services program that provides low/no cost legal servicesKnowledge of the legal issues faced by People Living with HIV/AIDSExperience advocating for the rights of under-served populationsExperience with Social Security determinations, landlord-tenant issues, evictions, wills, POAs, advanced directivesSalary:Starting at $75,000/annually (Depending on Experience)Public Student Loan ForgivenessEmployment at our organization may qualify you for federal student loan forgiveness programs.
