Job Description:

Summary:

The role involves ensuring the accessibility of American University's digital resources, advocating for and integrating inclusive design, managing accessibility projects, and promoting awareness within the university community.

Responsibilities also include developing strategies and policies, addressing accessibility issues, and participating in web accessibility forums.

Finally, the role includes collaborating with campus partners, application developers, and project managers to champion user-centered and universal design principles, as well as leveraging web analytics to support product discovery and data-driven decision making.

1.) Digital Accessibility Program Management

Provide leadership for promoting and spreading awareness of Digital accessibility across campus.Manage and/or implement various digital accessibility-related projects and initiatives throughout the organization.Develop digital accessibility education materials and educate the American University community about digital accessibility and furthers the digital experience mission.Oversee IT's digital accessibility program, report digital accessibility efforts to senior management and key stakeholders.Develop strategies, roadmaps, policies, procedures to advance and scale enterprise-level accessibility programs.Identify and guide remediation for digital accessibility issues to provide an accessible digital space for American University.Take initiative to learn and stay abreast of current accessibility best practices.Participates with committees, departments and professional web accessibility forums or groups to address accessibility needs.2.) Digital Accessibility Functional

Reviews Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPAT) for web apps under development or considered for procurement.Test websites and digital products using assistive technologies such as screen readers (e.g. JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver) and magnification software.Provide remediation guidance to stakeholders, content authors, and developers on and off campus.Support content production teams, development teams and product management teams with defect documentation, backlog tracking, and assist in solving accessibility issues.Develop, maintain, and document accessibility best practices for current and future systems and content across multiple audiences including developers, content authors, and vendors.Develop digital accessibility audit, remediation and tracking processes, learn and utilize digital accessibility testing tools.Develop and maintain AU's web accessibility resource sites.Perform accessibility audits utilizing manual and automated testing tools and provide insight for remediation to make the University's web and mobile systems in compliance with the W3C WCAG 2.0 standards, Section 508/504, and other accessibility related laws.Support real-time captioning services to ensure accessibility.Develop and maintain accessibility documentation for use by developers and the University community at large.Teach methods and techniques for addressing digital accessibility barriers in a variety of forums.3.) Design and Usability

Ensure user experience standards and best practices are being followed across all web and mobile properties.Collaborate with campus partners, application developers, and project managers to ensure branding standards are met.Champion and support user-centered and universal design principles for optimal user experience.Leverage web analytics as needed to support product discovery and aid data driven decision making.Competencies:

$95,000-$105,000 annually.Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Full-Time.35 hours per week.Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree.3-5 years of relevant experience.At least 5 years of related technical experience, preferably with 2-3 years of experience performing accessibility audits and guiding remediation.Demonstrable knowledge WAI-ARIA and WCAG 2.1 guidelines, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and/or assistive technology.Understanding of Universal Design principles (UL), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and inclusive design best practices.Hands-on experience supporting industry-leading assistive technologies such as JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA, ZoomText, and Dragon Naturally Speaking.Professional experience utilizing automated accessibility audit and quality assurance tools and processes.Knowledge of current best practices in usability and accessibility.Effective communicator both orally and in writing.Preferred Education and Experience:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution of higher education preferably in Information Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field, or comparable years of additional progressive experience as a web/digital accessibility SME.Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
